OK--my 1994 Merc Sport Jet 90 burned the center piston because the carb got some sh-- in the jet and leaned out--go figure--now I'm going to rebuild it and my question is??? where is the best place to install the gas filter ?? in between the tank and fuel pump or between the pump and carbs---I know this is a Force powerhead and I'm not sure if there is enough fuel pressure to pull the gas if I mount the filter before the pump---also it looks like someone before me put a squeeze bulb between the tank and the pump because a freind has the same boat and he does not have the bulb

I have a small disposable one (per Frank Acampora's advice) between the pump and the carbs to keep any debris out of the carbs.

you should have a bulb, pump it till it's firm, that fills the carb bowls with fuel before starting, kinda like priming a pump. Just make sure it's firm before starting, after that the pump will pull the fuel from the tank

I have a Force 125, I put the filter right after the gas tank and before the fuel pump and havent had a problem.

At the risk of repeating myself ad- nauseum, The button valves on older Force (before Merc changed the fuel pump) and Chrysler can fail (rare, but it does happen) letting brass chips clog the carb needle seats.

No matter where else a filter is located, a cheap plastic disposable filter should be located BETWEEN the fuel pump and carbs. The last thing that should happen to gasoline before it enters the carbs is it should be filtered.

At 3 bucks, it is the cheapest insurance you will ever buy. And by the way, most newer Mercs and Rudes that I have seen have a factory installed filter in this position.

Also think about this: on every automobile ever built, the fuel filter is mounted past the fuel pump. Some old Chevy's had them mounted right on the carb.
