I posted this in the "Other Boat Questions", But I thought this might be a better area after all.

I have a 1991 Evinrude 70 HP W/ the VRO disconnected. It has a standard 3/8" fuel line from the tank to the motor. What I need to know is: Where is the best place to put a Water/Fuel separating filter? I have a built in Tank on my Pontoon Boat and had some water in the gas problems.(See post "Water in Gas Tank"), about 6 posts down. Also, what is the maintenence of these filters and how do they work? Will I be able to tell when it's got water in it and what do I do when it does? Thanks And Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

im not sure how the filter work's...it just does and change it once a year...
I got mine placed about 50 cm from the tank (dont know in inch)
Like this tank..fuel hose 50cm to the filter..and then from the filter a hose to the engin.. and it works fine.

Good luck
Daniel

There are different brands on the market now(seachoice, tempo) but one of the best is Racor. They have a filter w/the see thru bottom and drain plug so you can get rid of what has been filtered from the gas. I bolted mine between the motor and engine w/rubber washers to absorb bumps. Your suppose to change the filter once a year. My motor runs and starts so much better and the bulb only takes 2-3 squeezes and it's ready to fire up. With todays gas another filter to get rid of water sure helps.

Dutch

Between motor and engine? I mean between gas tank and motor. I asked the same questions about a month ago. Do a search and you will have valuable info from how to install it to what kind of fittings you should and should not use. Must be time for MNF!!!

Dutch

DUTCH... 2.54 cm = 1 inch. 50 cm= roughly 20 inches or so, or for us folks who guess a little wildly at times... about 1 1/2 to 2 feet. (12 inches = 1 ft.)
As for how the separator works, it's simple gravity for the most part. Water is heavier than gas or oil and will go to the bottom. As for where to put it... I can only say from what I've seen... Pert near anywhere between the tank & the engine. The idea is to put the larger part of the filter on bottom, assuming it is built in somewhat of an offset fashion.

Thanks All! will be going to the Lake tomorrow and hope I can get it installed. I probably will have to mount it between the Tank and the Bulb, as that is the only place I would be able to bolt it on! Do these filters just have a "Spin on" type glass that you empty if you see water in them?

Re: Where to Mount Fuel/ Water Seperator Filter

You usually mount them between the tank and the bulb.

If you are getting a Racor, there are two different types, one has a see-thru plastic bowl with a plastic drain nozzle and the other has a metal bowl with a metal plug. The plastic bowl is for mounting the filter above deck and the metal bowl is for mounting below deck.

If you get the plastic bowl, when you see water, just turn the valve to drain it. The metal bowl you obviously can't see through.

There are different models for differnt flow rates.

You should check out their website for details. Racors are made by Parker Filtration.
