Where to mount remote control?

I have a 14 foot Whaler type boat that I just bought brand new. I'm trying to figure out where would be a good place to mount the control for the engine. It can't go onto the side console, and has to be on the right of the driver, alongside the gunwale. I would mount it to the gunwale, except the fiberglass there is only a little more than 1/8" thick. I don't want bolts and washers sticking out the side of the boat. Do I have any other options?

Any chance you can take a picture of the area your thinking about?

For the gunwale that's only 1/8" thick can you put 1/2" plywood backer behind it to give it extra strength?

The manufacturer went out of business 5 years ago. There are no pictures or brochures of the boat. I could put a wood backer but the main thing is I don't want to drill any holes clean through the hull and have bolts and washers sticking out the other side.

Pix would be worth 10,000 words here. With nothing to look at, sounds like you're going to have to epoxy the piece of wood to the fiberglass & use it as a mounting surface. Use screws to mount it into the wood, not thru-bolts. May want to use 3/4" so the screws bite better.

The first picture shows the control and it's about where I want it to be. It just has to be levelled out.

AJ - I'd build a little stepped piece out of wood to match the general inside contour of the hull & use resin to seal the wood & stick it in place. That would give you a nice flat surface to mount up to. Again, use screws & not thru-bolts to mount the control.
