Where to mount rod holders?

I've got a 1984 Bass tracker 3. I can't figure where to mount some rod holders. The previous owner had a lone holder mounted into the side of the boat. However I don't wish to drill holes threw the side of my hull like he did. Risk of leaks, etc. Anyways does anyone else have one of these boats and a suggestion on how to mount rod holders? My aim is for drift fishing with at least 9 holders.

Re: Where to mount rod holders?

Ill get some up when I get home this afternoon. In the mean time all describe it. The top of the side is round followed by flat hull down about 3 or 4 inches then what looks to be a horizontal support appx 2 inch thick. The previous mount is drilled threw the flat part of hull between the round top and the support.

Re: Where to mount rod holders?

On my walleye boats where I have a multitude of rods for walleye, panfish and musky, I mounted them on the front side of the helm so the rods face the sky. They are handy when a quick change of tactics is necessary. The boat also has a rod locker but it would not hold all the necessary pieces. For trailering they ride on the floor.

Does that holder in the picture hold a rod good enough since there is that lip there?

Some of the other guys may be able to come up with something better but if that lip is a limiting factor then I think more of what you have would work but maybe just use some different hardware and some sealer and start fishing.

Got a welder?

I made this out of steel (it hasn't rusted.....yet). Port side nutted on bottom to keep it from loosening while trollin' for big fish.

Drill out rivets in rub-rail and replace with bolts, bolts that hold rod holder to gunnel. The rod holders are DriftMasters, the bases are some 3/4" (1" ???) steel tube with all thread couplers welded on at an angle.

Re: Where to mount rod holders?

Those are Fish-Ons. That's exactly what I have on mine. I mounted the bases (like in the pics) in 6 diferent places, so I can mix and match the holders themselves wherever I want depending on where I'm sitting.

I mounted mine flush with the top, and positioned the holes behind the rubrail. I used 1/4" heavy thread SS screws, just long enough to get full thread into the hole, but not too long that the go thru the rubrail. Thus, you can see no fasteners on the outside. If you seal the holes there is 0 chance of leakage. Although I wouldn't mount a deckl cleat that way, its certainly stoung enough for a fishing pole even if you're trolling.

Gotta love those Fish-Ons. When I'm moving from spot to spot I tip them up so the poles are vertical.

got any pics jim?

no welder here.

No welding needed. I've been using Fish-Ons since about 1982 and they are still available. The new ones are virtually identical to the originals.

Here's one in the fishing position, and the other tilted up...

PS - you DO understand that what you have is just the bracket mount. The actual rod holder was not shown in the pic. All you need to do is mount them higher - flush with the gunnel. As now they are probably too low to work well. And pleaseee, use the correct length bolts. Sticking out like that looks like an amateur did the work!

I have to say I like your design better than any commercial product I have seen to date.
