Where to put o-ring on water pump

I have a 1981 Evinrude 15 hp that I replaced the water pump with a kit from Sierra. Everything went well except there is a small o-ring (a little smaller than a dime) that I can't figure out where it goes. Possibly around the shaft somewhere, but where? Thanks

At the top of the drive shaft should be a groove put it there. It seals the driveshaft/crankshaft splines from water and the exhaust.
