Might fire it up in a barrel again before taking it apart, if currently running – see if the l.u. is shifting properly and check compression. Can’t address the hist of l.u. issues, but parts are undoubtedly available one way or the other. If any doubt about coils, I would just replace them both, do the other maintenance/fixes and go fishing -- if the motor is otherwise healthy.
Ice out is the best time for Michigan pike, IMO. 3 yrs ago in a U.P. lake: Two 8-9 lbs., and one 14 lbs. on red and white daredevles (only saw them caught, unfortunately, no similar luck myself). BUT, fishing up there with a restored ’62 10hp Evinrude I had – have pics of the motor somewhere, but of course no fish pics. Can always lie about fish, but motors are different.
