Where to start Points or Carberation?

A 1962 10 hp: I know its old, but It starts hard. I am thinking the first thing would be is a compression test then replace points? It runs pretty well after it starts but some times even after it is warm, I need to choke it and then hope for the best, I know its old.

Id go compression, spark, fuel line and pump if you have one, then carbs.

Test for " good spark "--------That does not mean laying the plugs on the block !----------It means you rig up something with a 5/16" gap and see if it will fire across that gap with a snap you can hear.----Only then can you say that the motor has " good spark "

Compression first, ignition second. It is more than likely that it has bad (cracked) coils, as well as the usual dirty points, etc. Until you replace those cracked coils (if it has such), it will never run right.

give up on the Force? Overall cost for parts should be around $130, give or take, if you rebuild the magneto and put in a fresh impeller. Compression test first.

Thanks all: No haven't given up on the force I just haven't got it out on the water, It snowed here Monday, I' ll check into it this week. But I think I'll check points. Any one know if coils go bad as in wear out? I had one fail last summer. It would not idel. I wonder if I should replace the other one. Is their a way of checking them with a ohm meter or something?

Yes there are ways to check a coil for simple shorts or opens using a DMV (Digital Volt/Ohm Meter). But that doesn't check them for high voltage break downs and such. However, you could have the best spark ever and even the proper fuel air ratio as well, but if the compression is pitiful, it will never run properly. First do a compression check. If those numbers are good, then proceed...

That motor will likely have 2 cracked coils or 2 new ones already.-----Coils contain many turns of very fine " magnet wire " which is coated with resin.---They do deteriorate with time.---Replacementsare very common and cheap.------The most important thing to do with a motor like a 1962 is to test / inspect everything before rushing out to buy spare parts.------Lower units are known to be a problem on those.

Might fire it up in a barrel again before taking it apart, if currently running – see if the l.u. is shifting properly and check compression. Can’t address the hist of l.u. issues, but parts are undoubtedly available one way or the other. If any doubt about coils, I would just replace them both, do the other maintenance/fixes and go fishing -- if the motor is otherwise healthy.

Ice out is the best time for Michigan pike, IMO. 3 yrs ago in a U.P. lake: Two 8-9 lbs., and one 14 lbs. on red and white daredevles (only saw them caught, unfortunately, no similar luck myself). BUT, fishing up there with a restored ’62 10hp Evinrude I had – have pics of the motor somewhere, but of course no fish pics. Can always lie about fish, but motors are different.
