Hello all, I'm recently new to iboats, lots of information I've gathered so far though, so looks to be a good site. I just wanted to get some of the OMC guys opinions on where I should start with this "project". I recently aquired a 1983 Tri-Sonic (last year made I beleive) 17' V-hull, open bow. I think it is a Victory model? I haven't been able to find much info on these boats through web searching, but I did find out that 83' was their last year. Anyway, it has the 2.5 Chevrolet inline 4 cylinder, model # 252FTHROTR, serial #J760321, outdrive model #982740 with serial # J312858. I beleive this is a Stringer 400 series from what I've read so far. The engine runs great, but will not shift into drive or reverse, and the trim is non-operational. I picked the boat and the trailer up for free :D (pics attached), because the owner was getting a new boat, and needed to get this one off his lift dock. The boat is very sturdy, good floors, hull, interior, etc. just a little dirty. So, starting with the outdrive, which steps should I take first, to determine if the problem is in the upper or lower case, and where to go from there. I've read on replacing the tilt motor on these, so I've got that down, but where should I look first for any other drive issues? I did notice the ball gears are worn pretty well, so replacing them for sure then I would guess a manual is in order, as most people on here have stated. Then draining the oil, looking for water, and/or shiny metal shavings. If none of the above, what next? Thanks for your help/opinions.

I will report my findings, and post some more pictures of the engine bay and wiring/controls. Just in case I miss something that others can identify...

Ok welcome aboard, this might be a long one.

You do indeed have a stinger 400, and may i add never saw one in that pristine a condition.

You do need a manual if possible a oem factory best or a seloc second best.

I have the seloc stern drives omc manual #3400 in the right hand corner. 1964-86.

And i have the exact same drive and HAD the same motor in my boat.

Now to your problem. Are the cables hooked up?

Simple to discover, open the hatch or remove the dog house ( cover of the motor ) and follow the cable that runs from the throttle to the carb and the cable that runs to the shift converter. If you had the seloc manual i can point you to the exact page. Move the throttle lever and does the converter move ?

Are the cables hooked to the throttle lever ?

Post your reply. You came to the right place, with great mechanical minds here.

Heres 2 links to get you started,

http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=259807 < Tilt fix housing

http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=275061&highlight=how+to+remove+ball+gear+shaft
^ How to remove drive how to remove impeller shaft inspections

Let me know what else you need this should keep you busy for a while.

Heres a few tips i know you didn't ask but here it is anyway.
1- never, ever run the motor without water going to the drive.
2- never, ever run the motor with the drive any where but fully down.
3-the motor should idle and shift in the water between 500-600 rpm any more can cause serious problems.
