where to start with tune-up?

My friend just bought a 94 boat with a 3.0L Merc. Myself, I run an outboard and know a few things to keep them running nicely. But not too sure on the inboard setups. The one shop around here has a long waiting list and the other don't want to help since he didn't buy the boat there. So wondering if we can do these adjustments by ourselves.??

Basically runs like crap when maneuvering around the marina or trying to load.
Stalls and revs when changing or engaging in/out of gear.
To me it sounds like the linkages are all messed up.
I assume an inboard setup needs a link & sync just like an outboard.???
Am i on the right track?
Is there any online links or procedures to help us.??
Or is this best left to the boat shop???

Also, he was told that this was a crate replacement engine. How do we verify what engine this is?? Is there a tag or number stamped somewhere?

You need to do a basic tune up on the engine first. I would start with a compression test - that will tell you if you need to waste time going any further.

Assuming that is good, do a basic tune up - plugs, wires, distributor cap and rotor, etc.

Replace / check the various fuel filters and water separators.

Make sure the lower shift cable is adjusted correctly. It sounds like the adjustment is off.
