Where to start ?

I have originally posted my engine problems under the topic of 'Violent Stalling and White Grease Leak'. I took the engine (1981, Merc 7.5)to the lake to try some of the suggestions mentioned in this forum and found my troubles are greater than I thought.

Most importantly, it is no longer peeing. This was definitely not the case last time I took it out, which was about a year ago. What could have happened since.

Next, there is gas dripping out of the bottom of the carb. Pretty steady flow of about a drip every second.

There is fuel running into the water through a screw marked 'flush'. I assume this is where all the fuel from the carb is going.

On the good news side of things, it started on the second pull after sitting for a year, and seemed to idle fine for the 30 seconds I gave it once I saw it wasn't peeing.

I didn't check the compression when it was warm, but, the cold numbers are 82 and 85 respectively for top and bottom cylinders.

Where do I start? I'm prepared to set up a test tank in my garage to work on this thing.

Roland.

Re: Where to start ?

I would start by putting in a new water pump impellar, overhaul the carb(s) paying attention to the float and putting in new needle and seats. Then with motor in the test tank (water above the pump area)I would start it to warm it up then do another compression check. be sure and have throtle fully advanced so you will get lubrication to the bearings and seals.
