where to store extra fuel

my wife and i want to take a day trip or longer with the boat and i know there are a lot of marina's to pick up fuel along the way
i just want to carry a little insurance so im not that guy!
i have a 2012 tahoe q4ss and i know the engine compartment is not an option. i need the pros opinion on suggested places for storage, so that the admiral gets the engine compartment space out of her head.
i tried explaining it to her but she doesnt understand, and would like some options so that she feels at ease.
also was wondering about the ski locker space if it would be ok there ,or should i just not carry any and fuel up when i get to the 1/3 rule from the last marina fuel up.

there's nothing wrong with just carrying a red plastic gas can, but not in the engine compartment. You might be able to fit a few one or two gallon cans in the ski locker. You can strap a 5 gallon jug to the ski step.

On a few rare occasions I have carried some extra fuel on my boat. I have used a 2.5 gallon can and stored it in the ski locker. I have not had any issues. Not recommending this to anyone, just saying that I have done it a few times without any problems.

never thought about the swim platform
just worried about the ski locker as the locker is connected to engine compartment due via bilge drain
i was also thinking of putting it under the admirals console
and thats about all i would carry extra is about five gallons

I would not think the ski locker would be good since it does drain to the bilge just in case something were to happen.

Regardless of where you store it seems like just 1 more thing to have to worry about getting in the way or spilling so I would just fill up at the marinas and not worry about it. Just the "cost of having fun".

Ayuh,.... The Hi-lighted option is Best, on the swim platform is 2nd Best, 'n there really ain't a 3rd option...

If you ever get to Lake Powell, you'll notice LOTS of boats with gas containers strapped across the diving deck...

see the problem with planning a course is the planning part i hate plans when i am on the boat it makes me feel rushed
and when im on the boat im out to relax

Ok.... take the chance the container on the swim platform totally seals out water. Never would I store gas anywhere inside a boat. If your ski locker has a drain to the bilge it would be a nice place for fumes to collect. I have a 21' boat with a 90 gallon tank... fuel stops never need to be planned!

Stay away from:
the engine compartment
the ski locker
cheap plastic gas cans.


Get a real safety can. Spring loaded lid, 1, 2, or 5 gallon.

Consider the other half of the problem.
How do you intend to do the actual refueling?

Pouring in 5 gallons in the driveway is a lot easier than on the open water, from the inside of a rocking boat.
If you spill even one cc; That is a reportable fuel spill in the eyes of the law.

No Marinas or even Public launch ramps allows On-The-Water refueling the their vicinity for that reason.

I assume you intend to travel the St. Lawrence.
That is not a secluded back water fishing cove with flat water and no neighbors watching.

If you want to bring spare fuel; use a 6 gallon OB motor tank and prep your fuel system to be able to attach the tank so the engine can run directly off of it. No pouring of gas needed.
