In the fall I saw a big home built aluminum yaht/ cruzer.
They put it in the water but it nearly tipped over so they never put it in all the way and pulled it out.
They started welding flotation tanks on each side to hopefull fix'r up
It looked really ugly but I want to see how they are doing.
A million spent , houses re-morgaged completly broke and the wives have devorced the 2 guys.

Any idead on where this thread/story is?

Thanks

well I can say this much.... If you are referring to a thread on here I suspect the owner probably doesn't apreciate you description of their boat.... Do a search of some of the unique words you remember from the thread

I remember reading it as well, Marina decided to build a yacht, it ALMOST sank on first launch on their ramp... only thing left holding it from rolling over on the ramp was the trailer it was still resting the bow on...

They were adding LARGE saddle tanks to each side of the hull to add additional displacement... the thread was being written by another resident of the Marina, and not the builders building the anchor... I mean boat...

last I saw it, they were working on finishing the saddles, but had not yet gotten there... the ENTIRE structure was plate steel... tall and thin...

Ayuh,... I think they got the decimal point in the Wrong place when they did their displacement calculations...

By several digits...

This is the Only boat I've ever built, literally from the bottom Up...

I think what I like most about that boat was their draft lines are completely under water... by a few feet....

Not to mention reading the thread... the interior is not outfitted yet, during the initial launch it was mostly empty inside, and still almost sank due to the displacement or lack thereof...

Got to give it to them for sticking to it. I would have had a fire...

It will be cool to see it actually floating though.

I believe they deleted the thread out of respect for the owners/builders of the boat. Sad but true.

If you look around on Google you might be able to find evidence of the owners' commercial venture.

Thanks, I found most of it in Googles cached pages. That project was quite a debacle!

yeah.....it was a real shame they deleted the thread.

pete was in a bad position. and some people not respecting his wishes.
he had to delete the thread, because if the owner sat it, i would jeprodise his friendship with him.

they did get it floated, and they did get it running under its own power. we were last waiting to see if if the yacht would pass transport canadas seaworthy tests.

cheers

Re: Where was that ugly ship project i saw?

The boat is a total disaster. It will sink in the first storm it encounters. This is the result of people scrimping and not hiring good engineers, and thinking they know enough to fix the problem. As the photo shows, its sitting way below its designed water line. It will swamp and sink if you sneeze the wrong way.

This is what we call a total "F*** U*" around here. You can easily lose body parts over a mess like that in this area, and/or end up in the trunk of a Lincoln Town Car, then get to see what its like to be buried.

I am no edgamacated engineer but lets see. Boat looks atleast 12 feet tall above swim deck, and maybe 4 below, and very narrow.

Think they would have needed about 2000 more of these in the hull...

Actually, Dennis, they probably needed more hull, having those in there wouldn't even be enough to float the boat if it filled with water, since it barely floated when full of air :)

I admire the spirit of these guys that did this.. too many times people assume you can only take on impressively complicated projects if you're a professional or have the money to hire one.

But if you do it yourself, you have to make sure you've done your homework right. It's not just a matter of saying you don't need a pro and then skipping that part of the work.

I kinda want to see if these guys passed stability tests.. I doubt they did, but I don't know for certain, and I hate not having closure :)

i totally agree with the spirit of these guys. im still rooting for them to get their dream on the water, working , doing what they wanted it to. (with out killing any one)

btw, did you notice it still had the list?.....the sponsons helped it float, but the list was still there.

i emailed the web master for that site and he told me that the owner of that thread(pete) decided to delete it no reason was needed or given. the fact that the name of the owners venture got out on that thread and could possible cause some finicial loss would be a good enough reason in it self. pete always seem to be a gentleman and never wanted the post to get to the point that it did (IMO). people were getting mean and nasty and kept mentioning their name.
it's a shame i enjoyed pete's updates and was rooting for the owners myself.
