Re: where's my evinrude

Is it white or blue smoke?

White smoke would indicate water in the cylinders possibly head gasket.

Blue smoke would be to much or the wrong type of oil, or the motor is running rich.

seems to be white . checked compression got 120 both cylinders hot and cold. thought that would indicate something else.

i think i checked compression correctly. i installed compression gauge and pulled start cord 3 times. is this sufficient?

What gas:eek:il mix are you running? It should be 50:1. If you are running 24 or 16:1 it will smoke you out.

It could be running on one cylinder. Change the plugs lately? Wires OK?

That is the way my two cylinder 40 ran when one plug was bad. Lots of white-ish smoke for a while. New wires and plugs fixed that.

I hope you didn't reuse the head gasket. In your original post you said that it smokes like a freight train and now you said that it does not smoke a lick. Which is it? You should be running 87 octane gas at a 50:1 ratio with a good twc 2 cycle oil.

Hwy Bohogin,
Looks like we have a similar problem. My engine (1971) 18 HP also is smoking a good bit(white) but not so bad as you have described and I pulled the plugs on it. I found one very clean and one that had the typical 2 stroke look with a little bit of oil on it. Turns out I had a small fault in the head gasket letting just enough water in the bottom cylinder to keep it from firing. I also had unburned fuel coming out the exhaust. Do you have that? The engine was running on one cylinder so I am changing gasket, plugs and wires and hope to be seeing a great improvement soon.
