Re: wheres my exact bottom

sorry....the net here is very slow.

YES.....I am saying that.

in the merc book the instllation can be above the stock height by 1.5 -2 ins....no more.
the builders now days are rasing the x height to get better speed out of the craft.

hopefully this will give you the room you need for the outer t plate

Re: wheres my exact bottom

Great this is good news, I am going to mount the brace right on top of that delta pad, If i sacrifice alittle speed I will not loose any sleep I just want this thing to run right and I do not want to cut a big hole in the new transom only to find out that the outdrive is too high.

Re: wheres my exact bottom

just to clarify.....

if the x measured form the lowest point is with in 2 ins you have no worries.

but if that step is 5 inches tall....and 15 inches form the transom....your toast

Re: wheres my exact bottom

btw....where was the vent plate on the outboard....even with the pad...or even with the keel?.

you can still measure with the holes unless you have allready changed your transom

Re: wheres my exact bottom

DSC04129.jpgDSC04132.jpgOk that delta pad measures 33w x 4h from bottom of keel x 8 1/4 deep from back of transom. I broke the merc book out and did the 90 degree method and it said measure 13 and 9/16 inches up from keel to get my crankshaft centerline. Thats where I noticed that my brace is about an inch or so above the x dimension but no more than 2 inches. If need be I could try the tape measure method but I do not know my transom angle :(

I can not recall where the vent plates where on the outboard, if I had to take a guess I would want to say even with the keel or even lower, the seadrive dropped it down alittle in the water and it also had a 20 inch shaft I believe. It was a 1988 blackmax merc 200 pictures below of the original setup

I hope this extra information helps. I appreciate it

Re: wheres my exact bottom

DSC04182.jpgOK guys, Im a retard. The t-square I was using the numbers were off as you can see from the picture. I was using the 13 9/16 from it which wasnt giving me the correct x dimension. its hard to explain but the t-square's 0 is below the long arm which made my measurements 2 inches off and that why the delta pad was getting in the way:facepalm:. Right now with the brace resting on the delta pad I have the correct x dimension

Before noticing this I found my transom angle which is 10 degrees so should I stick with the 90 degree method where I measure 13 9/16 or go the tape measure method where I should measure up 13 11/16 I know big difference right. Now I am just curious.

I really appreciate all your help sometimes I dont look at things very closely and it throws me off like now.

Re: wheres my exact bottom

I read your post, so what your advising me to do is raise my x dimension then or just leave it at what the book recommends for just above 25mph because for above 50mph it says raise the x dimension but in small increments and to not exceed 2.5 inches.

Re: wheres my exact bottom

your transom should be at 110 deg.

take a new measurement using a long straight edge and a measuring tape form the lower keel
that will tell you the truth......

you have 2 ins tollerance in the height of the drive.

Re: wheres my exact bottom

I think I am going to jsut go with the x dimension since I dont think I will be able to go over 50 mph with my current motor being a sbc 350 with a 350 cranked bored to 380.

Re: wheres my exact bottom

thats a freekin 383 stroker..........even with an alpha........(depending on the weight) you could see 70 mph.

is this alpha or bravo?.......the 5.7L is the top end of the alpha hp rating (basic rule of thumb is approx 300 hp)

im at the shop right now ......but the guy that will know is not in today and rex (vector) is on the lake.

Re: wheres my exact bottom

from what I was told a stroker would have to have a 400 crank. This has a 350 crank and the cylinders have just been bored from 4.000 to 4.060 which makes it the 383. This boat is LIGHT. Its an alpha drive. I was trying to get info in the motor section of this forum but not alot of help in that part unlike this part where you have been a big help

Re: wheres my exact bottom

Well my brother and I finally got the transom in and the stringers in. I will try to get pictures up tomorrow and I would like some opinions on what everyone thinks strength wise. Everything as far as stringer wise feels real sturdy. We used 2x12x16 for our center stringer 2x10x12 for our middle stringers and 2x6x8 for the very outside stringers. I know this is 2-3 times thicker than plywood used from the factory as stringers. My real concern are do we need to have the bulkheads. I have added 2x4 to join the stringers together. I will let the pictures do more of the describing. We also fiberglassed them in with woven cloth.

Re: wheres my exact bottom

You are right, you have to use a 400 crank (3.75" stroke) .060 over 350 with a 350 crank puts it in at a little over 360 c.i. not 383. Why did you bore .060? .030 wouldn't true the cyclinders?
You have great help on this project with ooops!!

ok......as far as the stregnth of the stringers........your fine......a lot of guys use ply because it is stronger on edge that a 2x4.

but you are fine with the timbers in there.....

i do have a concern......did you just use woven roving alone contacting the bare hull or ply wood?....or was there a layer of chopped strand glass between the wood and the roving?
im guessing you used poly resin?

Re: wheres my exact bottom

oh....the bulkheads?........just in front of the motor cage.

you can also place bulkheads at every 4 feet from the transom....this will help you mount your deck......you can also (instead of bulkheads) place a cross frame from gunnel to gunnel at 4 foot centers. the bulkheads are not that crutial in your size of boat.

if you do add bulkheads......make sure you have dranage under them !

Re: wheres my exact bottom

OOPS!, I when I removed the old stringers I got it down to bare hull you could feel that it was smooth in some spots but then you could see the strands. We placed a stringer in put the cloth up the side and made sure it came in contact with the bottom of the hull. We used the resin that you can get at home depot by the gallon. Here is the link to the new post of the progress. You might be able to see exactly what I did.

I hope you can tell from the Pictures OOPS! Also go to the link. Thank you
