I have 1987 Johnson 40 I think, but it does not have a typical choke or one at all from what I can see. No butterflies nor the holes for them or a choke solinoid that I can find. What's up with that?

Your eng.has a primer. Its a round black cyl.device with a red valve. The valve is a manual overide ,if your key activation ,which activates the primer by pushing the key inward while in the on position(you should be able to hear a click,at the primer. The red handle needs to be strait with the cyl.not at 90 degrees or it will be in the overide and flood the eng out

You didnt mention any problems.Did you just get the boat? You must also squeeze the ballin the fuel line to pump up the carburators and the fuel system,if the primer I explained about did not receive the fuel by you squeezing,it will not inject the fuel prime. You may hear it activate, but it needs to be charged buy squeezing the ball
