Went fishing off of St. Marks Lighthouse here in Florida with my two sons, a friend and his son. On the first cast, caught a smallish speckled trout. Decided to measure him just to see how big he was; however, I didn't have a single sticker on the boat that had a ruler on it.

I just restored this boat and the only fishing I had done was freshwater fishing for bream. Who needs a ruler for bream fishing? Nobody. Who needs one for speckled trout? Well, I do.

We caught a few sharks, catfish, and kept the boys on the pinfish to keep them occupied. We only kept one 30" black-tipped shark for supper (measured him when I got home). I was actually glad that we only caught 4 or 5 speckled trout that were clearly too small or I would have beat myself up all day for wondering if we were releasing the trout that were questionable.

When we got to the landing, the game warden did a courteousy check of my safety equipment and gave me a nice sticker with a 36" ruler on it. Next trip, I'm prepaired!

broken retainer on winch

The clicker part

Ok - same 17ft boat,

brother is winching it on board, it has rollers so it is hard to float it on.

winch - winch - winch away!!

He pauses to take a breather
lets go of handle
Handle free wheels!!
smacks both hands with tremendous force leaving large bruises and welts on both hands
as the boat plummets back into the water undoing the last 10 minutes or so of winching.

DAD - oh yeah thats broken and I have to fix it

I am still laughin even today at the murderous look my brother had in his eyes when my dad said that if his hands were not crippled I think he would have choked him!

James, I only just have the one built-in measuring stick, but it only goes up to 10 inches.

[edit] Sorry, I've been corrected; she says it's not even close to 10"; guess I'll have to get a yardstick. ;)

"Courtesy check"? Free ruler? From a game warden? Huh... Maybe I live in the wrong state...

Seamus,
It might have helped that I mentioned that my FIL is a retired Major in the Game Commission and was simply curious "if he knew him". He didn't, but was real polite to me, gave me a free sticker and courteousy check. I honestly think he would have given me one anyhow.
