Im looking for a 30hp engine and top end performance is the main requirement. I foolishly sold my 25hp suzuki and replace it with a 4ohp 2cyl tohatsu. The suzuki was just as quick. They don't make these 2 stroke suzuki engines anymore. Any ideas for a hi performance 30hp? im leaning towards a Yamaha. Any idea which would be the better out of the 2 or 3 cyl model? How about johnson or evenrude?

Not enough info, Jason.

What boat is it on? What prop are you using? What actual speeds are you getting?

There is no reason that the Tohatsu shouldn't be faster and quicker than the Suzi.

Hp is HP.

Let us know. :)

New Mercury 30 Hp 2 cylinder/2cycle is the same engine as 40 Hp 2 cylinder/2cycle. Since its derated, it should have unreal low end torq..or go for the forty which is same size and weight and fly!!!!!!!!!!!!

Its on an 11 ft aluminium sea-al super skua. Tohatsu had std prop but suzuki had stainless prop. Not sure of size. I sold suz to my friend with the same boat and we raced. I forgott to mention that he was carring a passenger and more weight and there was still nothing in it. Looking at specs suz 499cc and tohatsu only 493.
I need a short shaft for this boat. Merc don't sell 30hp (merc not tohatsu) in aust in short shaft. Only 40 hp available in short is tohatsu or johnson/evenrude which would possibly be a bit heavy. Thinking of 3 cyl yam 30hp or even 3cyl 40 hp tohatsu. much larger engine than 2 cyl tohatsu.

Jason,

No matter what you buy, the HP is going to be pretty close to stated rating.

However, three cylinders will be smoother and may be of larger displacement, thus greater lower end torque.

If it's true top speed performance you want. Look at max. rpm ratings and prop according to that max. rpm.

Prop selection and availibility should play into your choice. In that instance, I would think that Evin/Johnson and Merc. products would have greater selections. Mercury has a great prop. subsidiary.

What ever made you decide to replace the suzuki with a tohatsu, that is just wrong ... but glad you came to your senses and want correct this with a yamaha .... if performance is what you are looking for, you can never go wrong with a yummie .....
