The question is simple, I am looking for informed opinions and/or recommendations. I am replacing a trouble laden 1999 35hp Johnson and I want to know which new 40HP Outboard I should replace the current outboard with? The motor will be used stricly for fishing on a 16'Princecraft aluminum. Honda, Yamaha, Mercury or Evinrude? Thanks in advance.

Welcome to iboats. :) <br /><br />I don't see a bad one in your list. They're all fine motors. If you want speed, go 2-stroke. If you want to troll, get a 4-stroke. EFIs are a nice option, but Anybody can work on carbs.

The Evinrude E-tec is awsome, efficient, adjustable idle speed, light, quiet, etc.<br /><br />What's wrong with your Johnson !!

Roscoe, the E-tec 40 is a heavy engine. It's not light at all. It's the same weight as the 60, so it would be the last one I'd choose.<br /><br />I wanted to put a 40 on my little boat so bad. It's rated for one, but I can't find a 40 under 200+ lbs!! Good grief, my father's Merc 70 is 190lbs! What is going on here?<br /><br />I guess the day of the light fast outboard is gone.

Yes, I believe of all the engines the Evinrude is the heaviest. Any comments on Honda outboards??

Sorry, I guess I misread the chart when I looked in the book.<br />Or I looked at the wrong hp.<br /><br />""my father's Merc 70 is 190lbs! What is going on here?""<br /><br />Most manufacturers use common components on several different hp motors. Therefore the weight of a 40-50-60 hp motor could be identical.<br /><br />Hondas are great, if you have a dealer available to do the service/maintenance.

I absolutely agree with this statement...i own a 1992 mercury 40 ELPTO inline 4 cylinder and wow is that thing smooth and quiet. Its almost as smooth as my 150 v-6 mercury! Those 40-50 h.p inline 4's are the best outboards ever made(atleast in its horsepower category) as far as reliability, smoothness and quietness. I love it especially when a guy on my lake just asked me a few weeks ago if it was a 4-stroke beacuse its so quiet... :D

A friend of mine has a Mercury 40hp tiller on a 16ft Rebel. Its a 2004 four stroke fuel injected.<br /> Nice motor Id give Mercury a look. The motor starts right up just like a car engine.

Re: Which 40hp Outboard?

Weight critics need to look at the size of the lower unit on the 40 E-tec. It dwarfs all the others, swings a bigger prop and will not very likely ever suffer damage from abuse (not from 40 HP anyway).

the 40 etec is only a 2 cylinder. not a good design.<br /><br />not saying etec is bad... just that they shoulda atleast made it a 3 cylinder.<br /><br />and yes, its heavy for a 40hp

Re: Which 40hp Outboard?

I really can't see a bad apple in the bunch! Therefore the following opinions aren't much more than that ...OPINIONS!<br /><br />Honda, to me, is the best looking engine of the bunch and it's weight is comparable to the others.<br /> <br />The Merc looks HUGE and they really need to redesign it cosmetically. <br /><br />Yamaha is the only carburated one of the four strokes and is also the lightest. It's great if carbs are you cup of tea (for the self tinkerer).<br /><br />Evinrude is heavy for its hp and I would only consider it if 60hp was useable on your boat.<br /><br />Therefore my votes go to Honda if you want fuel injection or Yamaha if you prefer three carbs.

The Honda is a carb as well, is it not? I think the only EFI is the Merc.

Hi,<br />Mercury 40 EFI (Electronic Fuel Injection) 4-stroke would be high on my list if 216 lbs is no problem with your boat.<br />Link<br /><br />Or Suzuki DF40 EFI.<br />Link
