Which anchor(s) for a smaller boat?

I have recently purchased my first boat, a 1974 Starcraft 16 foot (6.5 foot beam) aluminum V hull with a 1978 70 hp Evinrude. (Boat model is a SuperSport)

I have no absolutely no idea which kind of anchor (or anchors) to buy. I will be fishing all types of lakes and rivers close to home in Wisconsin.

Any suggestions?

Should I anchor from the bow only, or from bow and stern to keep the boat from swinging? Thanks! Fred

I would get a Aluminum Fortress FX-7 4 pound anchor with 200 feet of 5/16 line.

Anchor from the bow only all most all of the time. Fishing in calm water and light currents you can set a stern anchor but must make sure your bow anchor is firmly set first. Be carefull to keep anchor road away from the motor.

Freddy, If the bottom of the lakes and rivers is soft (gravel, sand, grass, silt or mud), Boatist has it exactly correct. If the waterways are rock, a navy-style anchor should be considered.

If you anchor bow and stern, you will not swing in the current. On most lakes, unless there is a wind factor, a single anchor (always in the bow) is sufficient for still fishing.

don't forget a length of chain between the anchor and the rope. this keeps the anchor down in the correct position. i forgot the formula but someone will tell you here. i think its at least half the l.o.a. of your boat.
