Which Boat Is Best???

Hello, I am new to these forums and will be in the market for a new boat pretty soon. We will be using it for skiing, wakeboarding, tubing, kneeboarding, and just cruising around. I have two older boats right now and want something that will be more reliable. I went to the boat show and like the 2007 VIP 202 Vantage. It felt huge for a 19 foot boat and had a 5.0 Mercruiser V8 220 HP. I also saw a 2007 Searay 195 Sport with a 5.0 Mercruiser V8 220 HP. The Searay felt about half as big, but the salesman said that searays were built better and would last longer. What I liked most about the VIP was the walkthrough on the back that kept you from having to walk on the interior when reboarding the boat. Which boat is the better boat. Are they pretty comparable. What are top speeds I can expect? Thanks and sorry for the long post.:)

I had a Sea Ray Sundancer for nearly 10 yrs, it NEVER gave me any cause for concern and it saw lots of big water here in the Channel Islands in So cal. If I were looking for another ocean capably small craft thats where I'd start. I did bury the bow in rolling swells and had a few crest on the bow seeing a lot of green water passing the windshield during El Nino one year and it mostly shed off the cabin structure and what got into the well area drained rapidly through the rear scuppers. Just my experiance.

"last longer" needs to be kept in perspective. The more expensive Sea Ray does use better appointments and materials. With the result that it will age more gracefully. But that doesn't mean the VIP is certain to fall into pieces on you! With typical lake use it will keep floating just as long as the Sea Ray. Just show its age sooner.

With brands well outside of the mainstream, such as VIP, I would make the local dealer a major factor. Outstanding dealers deserve consideration, whatever their brand. On the other hand odd boat plus lame dealer usually adds up to poor demand in that area.

There are a whole LOT of other 19-20 foot bowriders with the walk-thru transom feature. Wouldn't hurt to look around some more.

Re: Which Boat Is Best???

let's talk ranking of boats here

Higher class boats-- Sea Ray, Chaparral, Cobalt and some would say Regal

Middle class- VIP- four winns, Caravelle, Reinell

Lowest class- Bayliner, sting ray , Glastron, Larson,

So do you want a Lexus, Toyota or a Kia?

For the grins of it look on E-Bay and enter the boat brands, some have good photos so you can see layouts etc. It is for the most part a function of what you feel you want to spend as to how big and fancy it will be. I bought mine second hand and was never sorry for having done it. If the hull and running gear are sound the boat can be spiffed up. If its a poor design or poorly maintained just look some more until one says Its Me you want. Sorta like finding a mate, after all if you are into your boat and the water she will be your mate of sorts. Good luck.

Err, I would rank VIP closer to Bayliner than Four Winns. Which is not meant as a death sentence. I actually like Bayliner ...

VIP is a good boat--but I think you will on almost any forum that Bayliner ranks near the bottom- it is a very stripped down, basic boat --

Re: Which Boat Is Best???

I just got a Larson LXI 208 with a 5.0 MFI Mercruiser (260HP) and love it. It comes with the walk thru transom standard along with a 4 speaker stero, raw water transom shower, Bow & Stern Ladders, Swim Platform, cooler, depth finder, auto bilge, tilt steering, etc standard.

I also got snap in Bow & Cockpit covers, Bimini top, & cockpit table for less than $28K. The 2007 that I got also comes with a 5 year warranty on everything except the snap in carpet and a lifetime hull warranty.

the new bayliners 205 and 225 are top notch boats. nothing like the old ones. complete new design, and quality. especially with the glass liner, option.

Re: Which Boat Is Best???

tash, I remember your thread on the new Bayliner test drive you had. Now, I see you continue to remind folks of how solid an impression that boat made on you. It's interesting, but not surprising, that the "Bayliner is lowest quality" remarks continue even though many haven't been on a bayliner ever or at least in the past few years.

Now, it seems the merger of brands under one or two owners is able to bring up the quality of the entry level boats (Bayliner, Glastron are two i've seen at shows and been impressed). Does that make a Bayliner a SeaRay equal....no of course not. It is a simple fact that some of the premium brands use higher quality materials.

One obvious knock on Bayliner historically is the upholstery doesn't hold up well. Yeah, it was cheap, low-quality upholstery and it did fall apart sooner than many better brands. Is the new material better? Probably. Is it Cobalt level, no way. But if it is maintained well it should hold up fine for years.

Anyways, quality issues are VERY hard to change perception with reality! Just ask U.S. auto companies. We all still remember the 70's/80's when the U.S. cars rusted out and fell apart at 80k miles. Do they still? NO, but even 20 years later the old quality issues haunt them. Bayliner will face the same uphill battle, and to a point it's their own fault.

Sorry for the long, somewhat off-topic post. Back on topic, yes, it is remarkable how SMALL the interior of most 19' models are these days! I have a 1985 19 footer and if I want to ever get a newer boat I think I'll need a 21' just to stay even in interior space! If the VIP is a bigger interior 19' THAt would be a biggie for me. The Searay you reference looks like the interior of a 17' to me - it wouldn't even be under consideration for me with three kids and their friends along all the time.

Re: Which Boat Is Best???

The big problem here is your all worried about what you can see VS what is hidden

If you search the surveys of David Pascoe you will find there are MANY hidden quality problems on the "GOOD" boats

And i think you will find Searay has built the most BIG boats(40+ ft) with really bad hull core problems

Err, sorry to say this tmh, but the '96 Dodge that I owned DID "rusted out and fell apart at 80k miles". So I now drive a Honda ....

A 40+ foot Sea Ray would probably be in the $275000 and up price range, it may be a bit more than members of this forum would be shopping for. It makes nice debate material but what about the quality issues for the smaller more attainable boats.

Re: Which Boat Is Best???

So is the VIP a good and durable boat? How well should I expect the interior and paint to hold up? Is the 34 ounce vinyl strong vinyl? Any feedback about similar boats in the catagory I am looking is appreciated. orion 25, thanks for your reply. The Larson 208 LXI is a beautiful boat. I plan on going and looking at some in person, as they have the features I am looking for. It sounds like you got a great deal. And tashasdaddy, thanks for your reply about bayliners, I plan on going and looking at them too. It seems that with either the 205 or 225, you will be getting alot of boat for your money. Thanks for all the replys and keep them coming, lol!!!
