i'm swapping my yamaha 60 for a 2001 5o tohatsu 2s that my buddy has. the prop he has is banged up, with no numbers on it, and it looks to me like a pontoon prop. maybe a 10 or 11 pitch. so i've got to get a new prop and a 13 pitch should be what i need for my boat. my question is, what is quality al or ss prop that performs well with the tohatsu? or should i just get an oem and ride?

The best bang for the buck is the Solas Rubex aluminum series. They actually can equal the performance of some SS props for under $100.

Usually the prop size is in the area under the prop nut.
I'll second that. The Rubex has a removable hub where the Solas Amita Is a conventional hub.
A removeable hub makes it slightly less expensive to swap props also down the road if your Rubex was right for a different motor
you could use it by getting the appropriate hub.

couldn't decide on a prop, so i took the one i have and tapped out the dents, filed the edges, and went over it with a wire brush. was able to see a number, C13.5. assuming it's a 13.5 pitch oem prop, which is kind of an odd pitch, i would think? apparently someone painted it and i couldn't make out numbers before. gonna try it out once these gale force winds subside. would like to have a stiletto or turbo, but if this one performs well and has no vibration,or spun hub, i'll go with it.

What size and weight boat?
When you test get us the wot rpm and speed by gps.
Some cells have a gps app.

1648 grumman. @550 lbs. hull plus 2 batteries, 6 gals. gas, 30 lbs. of anchors, and me of course. i will report gps speed and rpms. got motor from a friend who knows nothing about boats and has no tach. i've been in his boat and it was slow to plane, but it was on a carolina skiff that is fairly heavy. gotta see how it does on my boat before i go any further. prop was beat up and it may not prove an accurate baseline.

A tach would be a big help.
Something like a Tinytach or other induction tach. Easy to install either permanent or as a hand held.
A careful gps speed will help a little.

Re: which brand prop for tohatsu 50 2 stroke

tried it today at the river, which current plays a factor on speed. wot 6000-6100, 32-33 mph upstream,36-37mph(gps) downstream. by myself with 6 gallons of gas and 2 batteries. motor mounted in #2 hole and prop vented terribly. i couldn't even trim enough to make bow porpoise. with moderate trim, prop vented in turns. i was surprised with motor only mounted up 1 hole that prop had no bite. no chop on the water, so i would estimate top speed on lake to be @ 34-35 mph. rpm range is 5100-5800. i really think i could have got more rpms if i could have trimmed up a little more at wot, so i'm underpitched for sure. i definately want a ss prop and keep this one as a spare. should i stay with a 13P in a stiletto and would it get me at 5500-5700 rpms? i'm looking for good all around performance, and stay in my upper rpm range.

Re: which brand prop for tohatsu 50 2 stroke

Assuming a 13.5" pitch and 1.85 gear ratio your lake speed 35 @ 5800 I get about 12% slip.
A little high but reasonable.Very likely your venting issues are from the prop not your mount height.
Unless your looking for a more rugged prop with the ss; you might consider a Solas Amita or Rubex
in a 13" these do really well at about 1/2 the cost of a ss prop. This is assuming your 13.5" is actually pitch.
It will probably solve your venting problem and may even allow a little more height. Its hard to predict your rpm do to your suspect prop.It is safe to feel that slip should be lower.

Re: which brand prop for tohatsu 50 2 stroke

i had a turbo 1 on my yamaha. i ended up going with a 17P to replace oem 19P Aluminum to keep rpms where they were(5500). was very pleased with the turbo i had and would like to get one(hot shot) or a stiletto(triad 2) for this engine. but unsure if i need to stay at a 13P. thinking it may perform more like a 15P, which should still have me @5500 rpms, if the triad is like the advantage or turbo 1. definately going stainless over aluminum so the solas is out.

Maybe you can get your prop where they will do an exchange till you get it right.
With your numbers a 15" may be a reasonable start.

Re: which brand prop for tohatsu 50 2 stroke

finally got stiletto after having to reorder from another company. tried it yesyerday and very similar results vs. oem prop. prop still vents in turns, but not so bad on a straight line. i don't understand why the stiletto won't run higher, mounted one hole up. av plate is @ .5-1" above keel. turned 5600 rpms and wot speed was 35. i went ahead and lowered engine all the way down on transom. figure if a stiletto can't run one hole up, there's no use playing with height.
