The 6th picture shows the hole I am talking about (his plug is missing) yours will probably have a steel square headed plug in it , take the plug out , run to a hardware store and get a threaded barb that you can use to adapt that to your vac gauge

This hole in the first picture. I think I can just barely see in in the 2nd picture. Zoomed in in the 3rd picture

Your pictures don't show the Throttle body very well, there were often Vacuum access ports on there, sometimes plugged. It is also a place where a Vacuum Port can be added with a bit of drilling and tapping.

The choke should open up fully by 2 minutes or so

That Plunger, as you call is what opens and closes the Secondaries on that Carb.It will not move until the
re are sufficient RPMs and Load on the engine to warrant the Secondaries to feed Fuel

My 2bbl has a slightly different Electric Choke. It gets its vacuum for Pull Off through Vacuum Hose and Port.
Sorry for the bad info

yes , thats it . pull that plug out of there and adapt a brass barb to a vac gauge and you are in business.

Is there a way to test the choke? It is electric. When does the plunger in the 3rd picture move? Can I connect and disconnect the wires to it to see what it does?

this choke is electric, it should be closed when the engine is cold and as soon as the choke coil in the black plastic cap warms up it will open the choke plate fully. It needs a 12v source with the engine running and a ground. the plunger in the 3rd pic is for the secondary diaphragm. When your manifold vacuum drops enough it opens up the secondary throttle plates.

Thanks Lou. I'll watch for how it operates or have a friend watch, She does run very well wide open so expect the secondaries are operating correctly.

After testing the coil, I think a weak coil was causing the problems at idle. I'm going to lead up on the tests.

Lesson learned: Start with the basics. I changed the distributor cap and that affected Everything. Now, after redoing the idle mixture, she idles at 600 rpm. That also help fix the shifting problem I was having. See another post.
