I have a basket case 1998 23' bayliner trophy with the original 4.3 and alpha 1 outdrive, it was missing the coupler and flywheel, from what i have read the starter with the two long bolts uses a 14'' flywheel which I have located, problem now is im not sure which coupler I need. thanks for any help.

18643A5 is the Mercruiser PN for your engine.

Re: which engine coupler 4.3?

Well, my coupler arrived and I trial fitted it to my flywheel (the holes match)then slid it on the outdrive input shaft and it won't turn, knowing that I will need to remove the outdrive before I install engine I attempted to remove the outdrive and it won't come off but a 1/4 inch with it shifted to forward gear. Im guesing that the 5 years this boat sat out in the weather with engine out and the gimbal bearing exposed has caused it to be seized in the housing. Here is where things might get ugly if I do this wrong. My plan is to soak the bearing as best I can with PB Blaster, let sit 24hrs, hook a come-a-long to the outdrive to exert some pressure (I don't have any one to pry on it while I get inside the bilge) from inside the boat use a air hammer with a tapered punch to rattle the shaft and bearing out...maybe. anybody with a better idea? I don't want to FUBAR my housing or drive.

pb blaster is good and
aluminum expands more than steel so can you heat up anything to help get it unstuck?

An old 1968 OMC stringer, I once had was really stuck together. The bearing race was stuck in the intermediate housing after I got the drive shaft out. I had to grind out the race with a stone and drill.
got it paper thin on the bearing shell on one side and a chisel and hammer cracked it out.
I like lithium moly grease, it is less likely to wash off and mix with water.

Ayuh,... Use the trim rams to force it up against a block of wood at the transom....

All of my hydraulics and electricals have been removed, using the rams a good idea but requires extensive work. I have had to cut bearings out before but mostly on automobiles, It will be tommorow before I can look and see if these methods will work for me, thanks.
