Which Gear Is Which?

Going thru my stuff... found a couple gears, both electric shift type but obviously different hp. No, of course I never marked them as I knew I'd remember which was which. Sure I would. (sigh)

Okay, on one, the outside edge of the teeth are level with the outside diameter of the gear (21 Teeth). On the other, the outside edge of the teeth extend a short distance beyond the gear (23 Teeth). And one would be part #308274, with the other being part #308343. Unfortunately, none of my books is giving me the slightest clue. The book I should have kept, I sold as I knew I never need that book again. Here's what I'm speaking of (below)

Re: Which Gear Is Which?

Joe, just for fun I decided to try doing a little detective work. On marineengine.com I entered those part numbers and was able to get photos of the gears. The photos were good enough I could count the teeth, 308274 has 23 teeth and 308343 has 21 teeth. Also, just a little bit of googling suggests that the 308274 is for a V4.

Hope that helps.

Thank you my friend... I made a note of that and will not trust to memory again. I'll hold off entering the info in my database inventory for a week just in case anyone else might jump in here with a comment. It's logical to me however that the larger (extended teeth) gear would be for the V4 models as you state though.

Geez Joe, I was just going to say that. Normally the more teeth, the bigger the horse power. At our age we sometimes forget. LOL
