I have been using a high osciallation tool for cutting (less dust and mess) but more TIME consuming I'm sure..I have a 4 1/2 " grinder..What grinder wheel or accessory works best for ya in cutting wood/fiber/resin?

Thanks ,Pete

One of the most valuable small grinder accessory is the flapper disc for sanding. It can not be used for plunge cutting but does a nice job.

A standard grinding wheel 1/4" will munch through it all!

When using a flapper make sure you get the roughest you can. I used a 36 grit. Anything higher and you just polish the glass. As far as cutting, used a dewalt battery circular saw set to the deck height.

I use the flexible, flat 24 grit wheels

If you can get a diamond wheel for your 4 1/2" grinder.....It will take you half the time.

Also I bought a Roto Zip you may have seen them advertised on TV. It is somewhat like a dremel tool, but has an attatchment that comes with, thats a 3 1/2" grinder. It can be used as a die grinder as well. It works AWSOME! I got one for $79 at Lowes.

Hope this helps!

You can get diamond cutoff wheel or the grit type for metal or masonry, both will work.

Yeah, use a diamond or fiber cutoff wheel for cutting small areas, use a sawzall for cutting larger areas.

To grind down major bumps use a 24 grit metal carbide cup wheel.. I got mine from HF. Even though it's the same grit as the flap discs I use, it grinds large amounts of old glass faster than they do and it also lasts a lot longer. I do the major grinding with that then clean up with 24 grit flap discs, and in cases where I'm just smoothing I use a 100 grit or higher flap disc or a RO sander.

The "standard" grinding discs for metal or masonry are too slow for glass and not useful for smoothing or cutting it. Likewise unless you're trying for a final finish on fiberglass using regular sandpaper to shape it takes way, way too long.

I use 24 grit for speed of grinding with flap discs... I wouldn't use 24 grit in anything but flap discs, but in those it really gets the job done. Change discs often because the grit (at least on the cheap ones) wears fast on fiberglass.

Re: Which Grinding Wheel/Accessory ?

when i did the demo on mine i used a metal grinding wheel to cut thru the stringer channels removed the potting soil (stringer) and loose glass, then went to a 16 grit to blaze thru rough clean out, then switched to a 24 grit disc, found the 16 was way agressive and actually cut thru in one spot, cant get them anymore hf doesnt carry them anylonger. wouldnt recommend them for grinding on hull surface because of the hole potential. but they do make fast work of cleanup/prep for rebuild.
