I agree, you see the 'toons everywhere. They do pull like a parachute, but if you are only pulling it a mile or 2, who cares?
The point I want to add is that unless you get into the higher powered (expensive) tri-toons, you are lacking the ability to cover ground quickly (assuming conditions will allow that). We haunt the area just north of Tampa, and typically launch in one of several rivers that requires a few mile long trip to get out to the Gulf. A deck boat may be the better option for that reason. They can get up on plane and cruise easily at speeds that will be near the top end of even something like a tri-toon.
We sold our pontoon boat for that reason. We were tired of the long ride to get out into the Gulf, and of course the return trip. We ended up with a 22' deck boat, and now have some serious go somewhere when/if we want to. Still fine for putting around, plenty of room, and maybe a hair easier to launch/retrieve/tow.
Outboards are the way to go for sure!
