which is the better motor merc 115 or yamaha 115

i'm thinking of buying either a 2003 merc. 115 or a 2003 yamaha 115 the merc has a bigger block a little lighter and is a inline 4. yamaha is 10 lb heaver and a v-4, which one will perform the best? (merc. 113 ci. yam. 105 ci.)

bob<br />The Yamaha is rated as having the least problems, but I think either one is a good choice. The difference in power will be insignificant. Is the dealer the same for both and if not, which one is closer for Warranty work?

I can vouch for the carbed 115 Yamaha. They are great outboards. Although I'm sure the Merc 115 carb is good too.<br /><br />Couple of things:<br /><br />The Yamaha has a 20 amp alternator and the Merc 18 amp. The rpm operating range of the Merc (4750-5250 rpm) is narrower than the Yamaha (4500-5500 rpm), so propping will be more critical with the Merc. Also I believe the Merc has a one year warranty and the Yamaha two years. And I'm not sure you can get a 25" shaft in the Merc, if you need it.

I'd pay the extra money for the 4-stroke. Trust me you'll love it and the difference in fuel efficiency is significant.

if i could aford a new motor i would try a 4 stroke . guess i will hjave to wait till some one breakes one in and sell it cheep . never bought a boatmotor or car new.

I really don't know the answer to which is better; I have a 2001 115 hp Yamaha 4-stroke and am very happy with it. The Merc is probably a very good engine. What is really important if you're buying a new engine is the dealer. Will they come through if you ever have a problem? So far, my dealer has been very good and that's really important since I opted for the extended warranty protection.

The 115 four-stroke, 4 cylinder W/ fuel injection is one of the best running motors we have rigged. I have not had a unhappy customer with one yet. Expensive yes...but well worth it. Also the Mercury and Yamaha are the same power head. The best of both, Yamaha dependability with a Merc dealer network.

Tommy, I see you're from Finland. The 10 amp alternator spec is for European Yamaha's. "<br /><br />Yep, no V4 F115s. The discussion kind of got off on the 4-stroke 115 and similar power heads and stuff. I just wanted to make sure we were all talking the same lingo. Bob-op's Yamaha and Merc 115's were the 2-strokes....and they don't share the same powerhead.
