Re: Which mechanic category are you in?

Backyard mechanic here, I was a machinist for 8 years until I topped out in pay. I always tried to figure out how to repair anything mechanical. I would not own a boat if I couldn't maintain one myself. I'm rebuilding my first outboard now. I've worked on 6 that I've owned. The only area I don't feel comfortable with is diagnosing electrical problems. But with the help offered on this site I get through it. The electrical systems on outboards seem rather simple once you get rid of the stuff that can kill your motor. With a bit more experience with the electrical/ignition system I'll feel comfortable working on any aspect of the motor.

Yep, I be a backyarder too.

Since a little tracker I've always loved seeing how things work.

It's been important to me to be able to fix cars, bikes, engines and tools myself. I couldn't afford to have the toys I've had if I had to pay someone to service or repair it. Plus when I have taken things in to get serviced or repaired they mucked it up more than half the time anyway so I have virtually given them the flick forever.

Being a self employed carpenter with people working for me it's been very beneficial to be able to repair power tools on the spot. Otherwise it would have meant stopping work for the day sending everyone home, or going and wasting money on buying a new compressor or whatever.

With the way the Internet has gone, there is so much info at your keyboard and screen, with forums like this for example, help with virtually any project you can think of is available. Give it a go if you're hesitating.
