I'm trying to decide on a kicker motor and I'm looking at a used 2005 Mercury 9.9prokicker that was made by Yamaha and a 2008 that is made by Tohatsu. Anyone have any experience using both of these motors?

Are you sure the 05 is a Yamaha. I was under the impression that all the small Merc 4 strokes have been made by Tohatsu for longer than that. Just looking at Yamaha's current 9.9, I would have to say that it is remarkably similar to the Tohatsu.

I would tend to think that the Tohatsu would be the best choice since nearly every manufacturer is branding it. I had a 2002 Nissan/Tohatsu 18 and loved it. My new kicker will be a Tohatsu, there's no question in my mind about that.

If the 05 was made by Yamaha and the 08 was made by Tohatsu go with the 08. Tohatsu prices for their parts are cheaper than Yamaha's. Yamaha seems to think their parts are made of gold.
