Which motor, battery?

Second season is approaching w/ my 14' aluminum Polarkraft utility boat (semi-v), currently has a 9.8 Tohatsu, but I'd like an electric, especially for the lake where I can't use the gas motor. So it's not really for trolling per se, but noodling around when I'm tired of rowing.

Assume a family of 4 plus gear, and transom mount (no real space up front), what numbers do I need to pay attention to when I measure the transom, to compare w/ the shaft lengths advertised for the motor? And what battery? My outboard is a pull start, so I'm only running a fishfinder plus this new electric motor. I like the small size of Cabelas 12V rechargable, but it's not in stock right now.

Thanks for any insight.

Not familiar with the Cabelas model, but it's probably just a Minn Kota with the Cabela's name on it. Take a look at their endura series. Anything over 30# of thrust comes with at least a 36" shaft which should be fine for your application. Get a good quality deep cycle battery to run your TM and fish finder. The best (cheapest) place to get these motors is usually Wal Mart.

If you are tooling around with an electric motor as your sole source of propulsion with the family aboard, you may be a candidate for running 6v industrial or golf cart batteries in series IF your electro-noodling is a frequent activity. Bat size really depends on how long you ‘noodle’ about.

Just get a deep cycle RV battery. The bigger, the heavier, the better, the longer you can noodle!
