87 is good. No reason or advantage using a higher octane.

I have a 115 4-stroke Mercury on my pontoon, going on its 6th year now.
The 4-stroke is so quiet that one can barely hear it run.

For what its worth, and based upon my experience with my pontoon, I would recommend going with the 4-stroke.

I wonder....what mph difference do you see between a 4 stroke and a 2 stroke of the same hp motor on the same size boat. Anyone's thoughts??

There will be very, very little top speed difference between the 2 stroke and 4 stroke of the same HP. Same applies between manufactures for their respective models. The 2 stroke may have a little edge in the acceleration department, but that's also debatable.

Would you agree then that it's an old wives tale that 2 strokes are always faster than 4 strokes??? That's all I hear about and I've never really been able to make a comparison myself.

Always faster? Can't really say if 2 strokes are always faster. Depends on who you talk to or what magazine motor tests you read. But on a toon, the difference will certainly be negligible for a given HP..

go with the two stroke , it will out perform the 4 stroke and less maintenance to boot
