10-40 wt. for mine, but I would rather not pay extra for Evinrude/Johnson badged synthetic blend if other brands are doing a good job. What do the blends do anyway? Thanks for any insight.

Thanks JB. How often do you change it? Does it seem to be taking care of moisture? Thanks

2 for Mobil 1. Excuse my ignorance, but is this a plain oil? Synthetic, or blend? Thanks

Multi viscosities give you superior film strength with pumpability (best for engines with overhead cams, ect.) BUT very good for other engines too. My favorite is Castrol full synthetic 5-50. Favored sythetic by most racers... And labratory proven to be better than most other synthetics. If your using it in an outboard 4 stroke, I would seriously use only what the manufacturer recomends as far as oil weight. Outboard engine crankcase temperatures are considerably less than automotive. Heavy weight oils may not work properly.

I use 5/30w Redline synthetic. This is the viscosity that Honda recommends for my BF50.<br /><br />I wouldn't hesitate to use Mobil1 either.

I would use whatever designation the manufacturer recommends and stick to it. That is not to say to use the brand they recommend. Legally, the manufacturer must say: "use Evinrude/Johnson oil 10W-40 or EQUIVALENT", or "for best performance use....."<br /><br />Motor oil is such hype. As long as they are rated and meet specifications any brand will do. I came across a message board dedicated soley to motor oil and could not believe the losers that were having 20-post arguments over which one is best. As if they could tell a difference. Consumer Reports took a fleet of taxi cabs and filled 2 of each with a different brand of rated oil (10 or so different brands) and then rebuilt the engines at 60,000 miles. They measured the bearings and all wear surfaces before and after and found no diffentiable wear between any of the cabs. All oils performed the same.

JRJ; I am using Castrol Syntec 10w40 in my suzuki df115. I suggest that you stick with the manufacturer recomended oil for a while, just to make sure You are covered if a warranty situation comes up.For myself I can't see paying extra for Suzuki motor oil when for about the same money you can get a full synthetic. Most of the synthetics mentioned surpass the standards for 4strokes. You can check them out on the API website. See ya out there.

Thanks to all for the replies. Here is what I've learned, although, what I hear isn't always what was said: use weight that book says to. Synthetics are good stuff, but rings should be set before switching to them. <Read that somewhere. Dealer says SJ rating or better of proper weight oil will be fine. Did search for "motor oil" on net, holy cow!!<br />DanMcK, I ordered some filters from Brown's over there in NJ. They seem to be into customer service. :)

JRJ: yes they are into customer service and they have all kinds of info on thier site including diagrams just like dealers use on micro film. I sent an email to fram and recieved a part # for suzuki oil filter. We Can't use it now because use of non Suzuki parts voids warranty but it could come in handy later on. Next weekend I am going find out if she still floats. Never know with an old bayliner. ;)

Funny I just read a article that said and I quote "if a manufacture requires you to use there part ( ie oil filters, oil, gear lube ect ) or the warranty is void they must provide it for you at no cost" it is a law that is on the books as long as you use a product that meets the same requirments they must provide warranty service to you. It is illegal for a dealer or a service center to tell you that you have to use the manufactures products to keep the warranty in tact, and any dealer caught telling customers this should be reported to the BBB.

Re: Which motor oil for 4-strokes?

radsrh: You caught Me, fair & square, making a mistatement. I apologize for any misunderstanding . Here is what the warrnaty states. Starts on page2 of the Limited Warranty."SITUATIONS NOT COVERED BY THE SUZUKI LIMITED WARRANTY"<br /><br />Skip the first para, skip 18 other items which under certain situations are not covered to page 3, #19 which states "Use of non-Susuki parts and accessories which are directly responsible for the failure of a covered component."<br /><br />What I meant was as long as my motor is covered. I will not be using non-Suzuki parts, just to make sure that if something goes wrong, there will be no questions about equivalent parts which may or may not affect the warranty. Sorry if I created any confusion.
