I ran a Yamaha 200 SW series for 8 years and finally a few weeks ago blew the power head (pretty much non repairable). I looked for a new motor and there are so many choices these days its hard to stay up with the technology 2 stroke or 4 stroke. All the major brands have different setups. With the little research I have done I like the yamaha and the Suzuki. I have read lots about two stroke vs four stroke and am leaning toward a four stroke. The suzuki with a six year warrenty sound like they stand behind what they build. I am placing this motor on a 21 ft bay boat. My previous set up was a Yamaha 200 SW series 25 in. shaft, running a 21 pitch prop. the boat ran about 53 mph at 5500 rpm's. Any help would be appreciated.

Captsteve67

Four Strokes:
I have heard and read really good stuff about the Suzuki DF line of 4 strokes. They are super efficient as well as lighter than the other 4 strokes.

Yamaha four strokes have been around for awhile now and I've only heard good this about those as well.

Merc Verados haven't been around long enough to know the reliablity. I know they are heaviest but they are the most silent outboard ever concieved. They run like a 2 stroke, but are 4 strokes. However, the downside is that the turbocharger on the verado can't be repaired and if it goes bust then you have to replace it.

My buddy as a honda 115 4 stroke. And once again only good things to say about this motors as well.

2 strokes:
I like mercury optimax's here. The new ones 03'+ are mean machines. As fuel effiecent, or more, than 4 strokes. Meet emmisions standards.
If I was to get a new outboard I would probably get this.

Honda makes a terrific motor and has great customer service. Just make sure there are dealers in your area. My 2002 130 has 520 hours. The V-Tech 200 and 225 models are amazing. If I were to upgrade to a bigger boat, I'd love to rig it with twin Honda's (the Coast Guard does).

This is hilarious! Seems like if you buy anything made by anyone, you'll love it!

nice thing is they all break and Rodbolt gets a new pair of shoes, if they dont get meticulous maint then my horse gets a new pair as well.
I look each morning and so far Maytag is not on my shirt.
how and why did your 200 yamaha blow up? most likly it was an O2 sensor failure,a fuel maint issue or an overheat.
you need to find the cause or the next motor you purchase may suffer the same fate.
seems most the four strokes hold up well I dont trust any direct injected motor yet. they still have an abnormally high failure rate. but its a lot better now than 4 years ago.
I would love to find a yamaha precison blend 200 with carbs new in the box, taken care of that motor will give thousands of hours of service and its cheap to maintain, if you get busy and forget it takes 2 hours to rebuild the carbs and replace the fuel pumps and your on the water again. the HPDI has 2 fuel filters that cost more than a set of carb kits and a water pump.
but If I were you I would go with the dealership that offers the best after sale service and has all the tech's school certs hanging on the wall. while technoplogy is great and its nice to have the latest and flashiest whiz bang gizmos be aware that its expensive to maintain and repair some of the whizzy stuff.

How about getting a rebuilt powerhead for your Yamaha?
