If you had a high mileage (87,000) VW Passat with the 1.8 turbo, which oil would you use in it? I have always used Castrol GTX in my cars but just recently got this one. The dealer has always serviced it and they are still putting 5W-30 of some sort in it. BTW.. the car runs great but I was thinking with that mileage that maybe a 10W-30 would be better.

I am running full synthetic in my Jetta and I am at 106,000 miles and going strong. The 10W30 will suit you just fine in your climate area and I doubt it would impact your mileage. If you went to a 10W 40 that might draw the mileage down a bit.

Bob

I dont concider your engine a "High Mileage" engine.

I would be using a synthetic in it though, and the 5W-30 oil is fine. I hav around 160,000 on my 4 liter Ranger, and I still use a 5W-30 synthetic in it.

Hi
At 87k your VW engine is only just run in.
As long as you dont have any issues with your motor ie burning oil or leaks I would recomend synthetic.

I agree with LD. 87,000 is not high mileage these days. Think of over 150,000 as high mileage.

My last vehicle had 130,000 on it when I traded it, had lived its entire life on Mobil 1 and was in like-new condition, according to the MB wrenches who analyzed it for trade.

My current vehicle has 78,000 on her. She also uses nothing but Mobil 1. I expect her to go past 150,000 without breaking a sweat.

Is Mobil 1 good for a turbo? How long between oil changes should I go if I switch to Mobil 1 ?

Yes, Mobil1 is a great oil for a turbo car. Your engine holds I believe 3 1/2 to four quarts of oil, not a lot for a high reving engine. You could easily go 5,000 or even more if everything is running well and you do not have a fuel delution problem. If your oil smells like fuel when you change it, you should not extend the manufactures recomendation.

Actually the Synthetic WallyWorld oil is a great buy, Its a group 3, but if you are going to change it at 3-5,000 there is no reason to buy the high priced spread. Its about the same thing as the Castrol Syntec oil and a lot cheaper.

Thanks all for the good advice. I'll be looking into the synthetic stuff.
