which one ?Evinrude or Johnson 150 hp outboard to rebuild ?

I been looking at 1989 - 1994 evinrudes and johnson 150 ob to rebuild . Which is the better of the two ? and is there any difference between the two ? Is there any heads up to look for between the two ob , such as bad yrs or models ,cyl or crank wear to lookout for ?Does anyone know the amp output of the older evinrudes and Johnson charging system ? Thanks for the input ! JB

No real differences in the engines 'cept the name and hood color.

I would go with a newer model if I had a choice of an engine to rebuild.

Get the OEM service manual for which ever engine you choose........and read it.

Thanks OBJ for the input ! I was looking to stay away from all the computer and injection systems stuff. thats why I was looking for older ob . I did find a 2000 150 evinrude that need rebuilding . Can you disable the oil injection system on newer ones and use premix fuel in them ?I do run 20 to 30 mi off shore and would hate to hear a buzzer to late ! I have heard a few stories of them locking up motors if the oil injection stop working . I also dont want a motor that I need a lap top to find a problems . Thanks JB

Starting in 1991 the 150/175's are a 60* looper design. Before that they are the crossflow design. The 60*'s are far and away a better design.

As for disconnecting the oil injection, it's a personal preferance. Personally I would leave it hooked up.

I'd also be willing to bet all the stories you heard were either stories they heard or a sad tale about 1 piston damaged. It's impossible for the OMC / BRP oil injection to pick on 1 cylinder.

I agree with Dhadley. If your going 20 or 30 miles out, that's a good amount of fuel. Why bother hassling with mixing oil with that amount of fuel.

OMS(VRO) pumps are completely reliable, and have more than adequate warning systems on them to ever smoke an engine if you pay attention. Not trusting an OMS pump, is basically not trusting your fuel pump, but you never hear anybody worried about not using a fuel pump on their engine....do ya?

I Thank everyone for the input ! The only thing I was thinking is that if a fuel pump fails I get towed in worse case , if the oil pump goes bad I end up rebuilding the engin. maybe thats why we dont worrie about fuel pumps ! I don't know a lot about VRO systems but are they prone to clogs from sitting or need much maintance ? I also have a 15 hp pre mix kicker on the boat and would need to have a second tank for it ! If I want to disable the Vro, does it involve a lot and would it effect the performance of it ? Thanks for your input ! JB

Main thing with the OMS (VRO) pump is making sure the alarms are working. You would have an alarm for low oil in the reservoir, no/restricted oil flow and, on your engine, restricked fuel flow as well as over heat alarms.

Even if you are on the water and the no oil flow alarm sounds, it's a simple matter to dump the oil into the fuel tank, disconnect the alarm and keep on going....basically. And no, performance will not be affected unless you mix in way to much oil or not enough.

Certainly nothing is fool proof but the OMS pump makes life a little easier when boating.

(yes....I'm pro-OMS pump.....d:) )

Thanks OBJ , That makes me feel better about Vro with all the alarms . Is there a solution to the pre mix Kicker ? Besides a other gas tank for the kicker. any aftermarket device to mix gas with oil from the main tank for the kicker ? Thanks for the input JB
