all my life i have had mercury's around me as has my father. From the early 1960s motors (1963 mercury 500) to our most modern one (2005) they have treated us extremely well and have never failed us. With the proper maintenence and care, many freshwater outboards SHOULD outlast their owners.
On the master production schedule at work they list the pre rig, we rig to whatever that particular dealer sells, and of the 10 pages I looked at Yamaha was 1st then Honda then Merc, quite a few Verados, then BRPs,Suzukis.
Brunswick owns the company that built our boat, so we went with Mercury. Could have upgraded to Honda, but the Merc 115hp 4-stroker is fine for our needs. Service and parts are readily available in our area.
Maybe not the best motor out there, but hopefully not the worst...

One Johnson 65hp and one Johnson 6hp on my boat at the moment. The two '58 Bigtwins were on it before the current setup, but were gas hogs and need clutchdogs (thanks Mr. Hidden Gillnet! frickin moe-ron!). The 2nd Johnson 65hp runs but needs coils and a carb rebuild. The Johnson 4hp also runs but is a bit small for use as a kicker on my boat. The rest of the motors are in various stages of rebuild and/or neglect because I have too many projects! Currently working on the 2nd Johnson 65hp and the 10hp Chrysler.
We also have Lockwood, Elto, Buccaneer, Martin, Lauson and West Bend! Plus, Caille, Neptune, Wizard, Sea King, Elgin and Dragonfly. But more Johnrudes & Mercs than anything else...
