Which outdrive do I have?

Since I got this boat I've never really know for sure which outdrive I have. I haven't done much work on the outdrive yet, so it hasn't been a big deal, but tomorrow I plan to work on the bellows, so I would like to know for sure I'm going by the correct manual.

Serial number: 5691256
Driven by the great Mercruiser 470, 1978.

I have Manual #05, but that one is for TR-TRS models, which going by the pictures in the manual of the top of the outdrive, that is not what I have.

I also have the Manual #04, which covers the 120-260 models, which looks like what I have according to the pictures in the manual, and it lines up with my serial #.

I also have Manual #06 for the R, MR, AlphaI, but my serial doesn't line up and it says the manual is for 1983-1990... mine is a 1978 model.

So my guess is it's a 120 or 260, but not sure.

Before it came off...

Re: Which outdrive do I have?

Don, I actually have downloaded the ID & History pdf that you made. I am still confused though because the 2nd chart says it is a MC-I drive, according to 1978 and the 470 motor. But then when I scroll on down to the next chart it shows that it could be the 120/140 or 898/228 or 260 or 470 or TR/TRS, according to the year and serial range.

I want to go by the first chart and say it is the MC-I drive, but I'm not totally sure. And am I correct that it is pronounced "one drive" ?

I can be sure it is a pre-1983 model because of the round top cover with the eye on top.

Thanks for the quick reply Don.

Re: Which outdrive do I have?

i got a different chart (mercruiser engine drive model reference chart) from somewhere. someone here on iboats. it states that a 1978 470 is mated with a mc-1 drive.

if a '78 470 you need s/m #3 for the engine, s/n range 4886620-6218036. #4 for the drive. #4 s/n range is 4891650-6216686. your drive s/n falls within that range.

yep, i use the term 1 drive also. see my sig..

Re: Which outdrive do I have?

Seems the verdict is the 1 drive. Thanks for the info ziggy, I have the s/m #3 and #4 so looks like I'm set.

If I need to order parts for the outdrive, would I be looking for parts for the 120-260 units or "pre-alpha"? More specifically, for example, if I was looking for the seal kit, which one on ebasicpower on this page would I need? They list a set for the 120-160.

Just trying to clear it up now so I'll know for sure. Thanks for the help guys... :)

Ok.. just wanted to make sure. Seems obvious but the guy at the local merc shop wasn't sure either, given the serial and year, so just had to check. I really didn't know that the 120-260 was referring to hp. Thanks!

Re: Which outdrive do I have?

I think I understand now how you got confused. In the first chart, everything is listed by ENGINE model number, in charts 2 and 3, the drives are listed by DRIVE number.
Your mistake was going by serial number and finding it in several places. The serial number range is for all Mercruiser outdrives for that year or years of a run, and it would include one drives, and TR drives. You just have to stick with the one for your 470 engine.

So following that information, you have a "One Drive" no matter which chart you look at.

Ok thanks for th clarification Don. I suppose that is where my confusion came from alright. Those charts are great info, but apparently only so if you know how to read them! (sarcasm aimed towards myself!)

thanks again..

Re: Which outdrive do I have?

I have ordered parts for my Mercruiser drives from Doug Russell Marine. They seem to have parts for every outdrive ever made. You can order online at dougrussell.com or just call there parts department. I actually ended up buying a complete sterndrive from them as well for my other boat. The best prices anywhere.

Re: Which outdrive do I have?

I actually ordered the trim limit and sender switches from dr Monday. They just shipped today. Can't say I'm impressed with that but they blame it on the bad weather so no fuss from me. Idk about other products but they did have the switches at a cheap price.
