I have a 4 winns horizon 195 cuddy that needs some TLC. The transom has seized and I would like to find a new outdrive that would fit. What model(s) should I start looking for? What are come good spots to find used parts? I'm in the Philadelphia area..

Thanks

What drive is on the boat now? Are you wanting to redo the transom?

I'm not sure...I got the boat real cheap knowing i would have to re-do everything. How can I tell what drive it is? I know it's hooked up to a chevy 350. I'm wanting to do whatever i need to do in order to get the boat in good working condition again...if that means re-doing the transom than so be it.

What year is the boat?

Is the engine a Mercruiser, Volvo Penta, or OMC.

Without this information you will have to ask this guy, and Don S is the only one who really knows him.

Well we need more info, for sure.
The transom is a physical part of your boat, and probably has no parts that seize. It's like the bow, keel, deck etc.

So I guess we have to find a language we both speak.
I am not flaming you,I am just saying what needs to be done.I want to be of help.

Do you mean the outdrive that sticks out the back of the boat,or the part ON the back of the boat that it attaches to_Or is it inside the boat?

Forgot to mention most FourWinds used OMC Cobra Drives Which are no longer being built.

Re: Which outdrive will fit?

Sorry, I can't belive i forgot to mention the year. I belive the boat is a 1984, and it is definitly an OMC, which means my best guess would be it to be a cobra. I understand that the parts are no longer being made, but I am still very willing to fix the boat up! Thanks for your help guys, and sorry for the lack of info.

If you have a drive like pictured below, you have an OMC stringer drive like pictured below, and not a Cobra.

Re: Which outdrive will fit?

I know it is not a stringer as I have worked a stringer previously. If I know it is a OMC, and I know it is NOT a stringer...does that mean it must be a cobra? Are there any other outdrives that can match the mounts of a cobra? I would like to start searching ebay for possible parts...

Sorry about the poor language in one of my previous posts. The previous owner had trouble with the boat. He was cruising and the engine just cut out completely. Nothing would even turn over afterwards. The diagnosis from the shop, if I recall correctly, was that the transom had seized. For sure, I know that the outdrive is the issue, not the inboard engine.

Post a picture for us. 1984 is too early for a Cobra. Sure there is no black boot on the transom.

Re: Which outdrive will fit?

I may be incorrect with the year1989 also sounds familiar. I'm 100% sure it is not a stringer drive. The drive does not have separate tilt and trim switches. The tilt/trim is powered by hydraulics rather than the half moon quadrant and eletric motor as in the stringer.

I'm far from being an expert, but looking at some ebay items, i would think i could do the job for cheaper than $2000. I don't think the entire drive is ruined. I would think i could reuse at the bare minimum the housing, and replace damaged parts on the inside. If the diagnosis is correct, and the transom is the issue, wouldn't this serve to replace? :

The interior of the boat is in great shape. New carpet, seats, and I have stipped the teak wood and refurbished it. My goal is to get this outdrive in working condition and sell the boat.

I do not have a good picture of the drive to give you guys and the boat is still at the boat yard about 40 minutes away.

If the diagnosis is correct, and the transom is the issue, wouldn't this serve to replace? :

Until you figure out What you Have,..............
And,.........
When you figure out Exactly What the Issue Is,............
Then you can ask these Questions,.........

IF the transom Assembly is Bad,............... Then Ayuh,... That piece in the ebay link Might fix it...........

IF the Real Issue is that the Transom is Bad,............... Then NO,.. It won't help at All............

You keep saying a Bad Transom,+ Keep Asking about an Outdrive........................

Which Is It,...??.....

Btw,........ Transoms Don't Sieze,.... They Rot........

Gimbel Bearings on the other hand Do Sieze,..........And it's located In the Transom Assembly...........
