Hi everyone,

I've just bought my first motor boat - an unfinished project with a Mercury 2-stroke 3-cylinder clamshell-type engine. Can anybody tell me which part is missing from the side of the engine circled in red please?! I don't have the experience to identify parts that aren't there...

I haven't been able to identify the engine. http://www.maxrules.com/models/Merc_model_files/40-50.html (and other sites) say that the serial number is a 50hp 4-cylinder engine, but it's definitely a 3-cyl 2-stroke and the engine cover has a "60" decal on it...

Thanks for your help,
David

Thank you - that makes sense. So now I'd like to find out whether this engine has a regulator of some sort.

Do you have any idea how I can identify the engine? I'm skeptical about that serial number plate - where can I look on the engine for other identifying marks? (I have looked, but haven't yet found any...)

Your motor comes up as a 1979 mercury 70 HP and it looks like one. Put up a pic of the rest of the motor.

So from the photos above, do you guys agree that it's most likely a 1979 70hp?

Thanks again,
David

Well the cowl looks like an 86 or maybe an 87. A 79 cowl doesn't have grey or red stripes, just a splattered blue. But cowls can be swapped or redecaled
