I'm still having problems with my 40hp Mariner bogging down when I try to accelerate. I ordered all the manuals and when I got them I found that they sent the wrong parts manual so now I have to wait another 10 to 12 days for them to send me the right one.Go Figure!! Anyways the guy from marineengine is e-mailing me parts pages for my motor till I get the right one. I read the service manual troubleshooting section and it said that if I disconnect the sensors--both heat and oil and if I'm still having problems with the engine not able to accelerate I should replace the CDI Unit. Thats fine but the parts page the guy e-mailed me has 3 different CDI units all with diff. numbers. How the heck am I supposed to know which one I need?? I looked at the old one and none of the numbers match whats in the book. Can anyone help me out??

Re: which part to order??

halfpint1 Need your complete serial # to be sure, but I may have found the same page you have (it lists 3 CDI units). If your serial # starts with 6E9- ,you need #814988M which changes numbers a few times to 822884T.$187.00,so we must be sure of your complete serial number.
DHP

DHP--- the number is 6E9-L-450354. the old CDI unit has these numbers on it : 6E9-70 then under that it is stamped with either an F or a P then the numbers 8T13771 under those numbers its stamped 8X31. What that means is beyond my knowledge. Thanks for your help. It really helps alot. This thing has been giving me trouble since early June. Thanks again---halfpint1

Thanks DHP. I really appreciate all the help. How do you guys get so much information?? This old boat is the only thing we do besides working so you can understand how much this means to us.I know I've bugged you enough but do you have an idea where the best place is to buy the part? Thanks again. Halfpint1

Being on the computer is my rest and recreation.Helping like this makes me feel good.
It's not a popular stance here, but I suggest your local dealer.Lots of replies will tell you how much a thief he is,how he is a gold digger,a robber.I get ####ed because I AM a local dealer.
If you have a boat, you need to find a dealer you trust.
DHP

halfpint1 thanks for helping me vent...we are more than even.(oh,and you haven't bugged me,grin)

DHP-----there really isn't a lot of dealers in our area(we're a pretty small place) but I'm sure we can find one. Thanks again for all the help.I'll let you know how we make out. Halfpint1 :)

Re: which part to order??

DHP--went to the only dealer in our immediate area today and ordered the CDI--he quoted the same price you gave me. Its supposed to be here in a few days. Thanks for the help. Hopefully this fixes our problem. ;) Halfpint1

Re: which part to order??

Hi DHp---got the CDI unit yesterday. Went down to the lake & replaced the old CDI and when we got on the water the boat ran like a new one ---:(that is for about 15 minutes then it started bogging down again just like before. Guess we just spent about $200 for a part that wasn't bad after all. This unit is what the manual said we should replace--here we go again----back to square one. Thanks for your help at least we found a resonable dealer. Halfpint1

Re: which part to order??

halfpint1,sorry you still have problems.I did a little search, and these motors also seemed to have fuel supply problems.Run the motor, and when the problem occurs, have someone squeeze the primer bulb.If this 'fixes' the problem, replace the primer bulb.If the problem is still there, replace the fuel pump.
DHP
PS make sure the arrow on the bulb is pointing towards the motor.

Re: which part to order??

DHP-- we tried squeezing the primerbulb when this happened and that didn't help. We even tried giving it a little choke--same results. We'll have to check on the fuel pump. Thanks Halfpint1
