I'm in the process of replacing my distributor due to wear and want to upgrade to electronic ignition. I can't figure out which Pertronix part number is correct for my 89 460 OMC. Also what kind of rework will I have to do to insure the ESA still works properly.<br /><br />Your help is gratefully appreciated, as always.<br /><br />Pat

Pat, this isn't pertaining to your thread, but I'm wondering what the model no. is on the engine tag of your 1989 460 OMC King Cobra. I have the same package in my 1989 Bayliner 2755 Sunbridge and the engine model plate is missing. The engine was replaced 2 years ago by the previous owner and the tag must have gone with the old motor. Anyway, I need to identify the model for that year so I can buy the manuals from the Ken Cook Company. Any help will be appreciated.<br /><br />If you do a search on your subject in this part of the forums, I'm sure your subject has been covered before.

Pat not sure about the PN but this link will show you the diode/resistor fix required Pertronix Fix <br /><br /><br />Ron...it's even possible for you to have an 88 engine in an 89 boat but if you have an 89 460 it should have a square plastic cover with a picture of a Cobra on it on top of the flame arrestor which has a model/sn plate on it, also they put another plate on front of the thermostat housing. If you do have an 89 then your mod should be something like 460APRMED, I have a pair of them but the mod # is slightly different between them because of power steering on one and counter rotating prop.

Bob, my engine has the square plastic cover on the flame arrestor. Has the cobra and words King Cobra. I looked at a plate on the cover that has all the tune-up info when I removed it last night, but didn't notice any model no. I'll have to look closer tonight. Ken Cook Co. listed 2 model nos. for the 1989 460 - 460AMLMED and 460APRMED. Is yours the 460AMLMED? If so, mine must be the other if it is an '89, since it doesn't have power steering. The model no. for the outdrive is 986845, but that doesn't help any. Thanks for your help.

Actually Ron those models are both of mine. Here is how mod # breaks down 460=cubic inches, A or B= 1st or 2nd version, P=power steering, M=mechanical steering, L=left hand prop, R=right hand prop MED= model year designation 1989. I'm surprised yours doesn't have power steering. I have an OMC factory manual which covers all 1989 versions. You may want to check our eBay...see them on there quite often and they are much better than the 3rd party ones. Here is a link to the exact manual you need, little pricey but it's brand new! PB...don't even futts around...call a Pertronixdealer. I use CarShop. they are the lowest priced Pertonix distributor, they're great to do business with friendly, helpful and knowledgable. 1-800-603-4359.<br /><br />PS - spend the extra money, buy the Pertronix Ignitor II so you don't have to worry about burning things up if you leave the key on or if the engine stalls while you're away from the controls, a few other worthwhile features too make it a good deal for the extra dough.

Hey Bob, While I was doing the human pretzel on Saturday cleaning out the gunk under the motor in the bilge, I noticed a pump on the lower right front quadrant of the motor that sure looked like a power steering pump of some sort. When we had the boat out Sunday, it steered so easy that I figure it must have power steering. With all that crawling around in the engine compartment, I still never saw a tag with any numbers on it. The plate on the plastic flame arrestor cover only has tune-up data on it. It sounds like my model would be the 460APRMED. Thanks for the link on Ebay. PB - I apologize for hijacking your thread. The info presented on the Pertronix will be helpful when I change my points to electronic ignition.
