Which Prop for this Combo

Ok...I finally am getting a motor for this boat. I could not get myself to spend $10,000 on a new motor, so I found a nice 1996 Mercury 125HP 2-stroke Classic motor for a good price and it has about 100hours on it. My question now is prop. It currently has a 15pitch prop, and that seems like not very much for this combo.

Heres a link to the pictures of the boat this motor is going on:
http://forums.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=26;t=002502#000000

I went to mercury's website and they recomended the LaserII with ~25pitch.

What are your thoughts...I honestly don't know how much this boat weighs, but it is 18.5' long, and it has a semi-shallow V.

I personally think that a 25P on an 18 1/2' boat with a 125 is a bit too much prop I think a 21p might be a good place to start and you may even have to drop to a 19P.

I tend to agree. Especially if youre main purpose is skiing.

yeah...main purpose will be skiing...ok..the place mounting the motor is going to give us a prop to use, and we can just trade him back and forth until we like the one that we try and then we can purchase that one.

What about Diameter? is there a standard diameter or can you get different ones.

The boat will mostly be used for skiing and just "cruising" up and down the river or on a lake. so a good overall prop would be nice. maybe I will start with the 19 and see how that works, and then trade for the 21 to see if there is any improvment. Thanks

The 19 will, obviously, pull better than the 21. I'd do just like you mentioned. I think that's a good plan. Get the 19, pull some skiiers and see how it goes.

Re: Which Prop for this Combo

Hi there,
I just upgraded to the same 1996 125ELPTO 2+2 motor on my 17' starcraft. I am running a 22 pitch highfive for sking. I am a little above recomended WOT with a full load but the boat jumps out of the water with this prop. The motor came with a 26 pitch laser II but that prop is too much for my boat unless the boat is unloaded and I am by myself.
This is a small case motor remember that when when trying out props for it there are not as many choices as with a large case.
Good luck with that motor, as it pulls like a truck once the second 2 cylinders kick in. You might have problems pulling people up smoothly.

What kind of speeds do you think I could get with a 19pitch
21pitch
or bluewater with the 22pitch 5-blade what kind of speeds would you guess I could get with that prop? What does small case/large case mean

The original Chrysler 130HP (~100HP) at the prop would pull skiers fine and when not skiing would get up around 45-47mph...with no trim control...as a refrence.

Running at around 5200 rpm my speedo says 50-51mph. I seemed to have misplaced my GPS so I can't tell you what the real speed is. If I had to guess I would say around 46-48 mph. The motor will spin prop faster but I have heard these 2+2 motors don't like to be overreved. I know I am not lugging with a 22 pitch thats for sure. I am looking for something like a laser in 24 pitch or maybe a trophy plus with 23" to try out.
Your hull looks much sleeker than my bumpy starcraft. If you would like to try my 26 pitch laser I would be glad to lend it to you to try.

Am I missing something? Do you even have a tach?

I will once I get the motor on, scheduled to go on Feb 23. They will be installing a new speedo, tach, and water pressure gauge. I am just trying to set everything up so when I get the boat back, I can get to the lake and try out some props.

bluewater19...thanks for the offer. I will see what the 15 does on the boat (since that what it came with) and move up from there. I will let you know. :)
