Re: Which prop is better?

Caught three, weighed one little one...better than some, worse than most.

DH, so far, the last testing with the 3 blade, 25p Tempest had been the best. Speed, stability, "feel", and somewhat of a holeshot.
BUT, what will cause this prop to sort of "blow out" as the boat begins to plane?

Re: Which prop is better?

Props with a lot of bite are designed (sometimes) to vent on acceleration to get the r's up quicker. Or the motor height could be a tad high for that particular blade design.

Is the hub of the Tempest slightly smaller than the gearcase?

Good catch on the plate. Very nice!

Re: Which prop is better?

I'm trying the 27p Tempest later today, and I think I'm going to 1/4" down with my motor...Boat feels good here and I think I'm "real close" to be right on the money with the height.
Tempest hub is big, it's not smaller than the gearcase.
That yamaha 24" four blade IS smaller than the gearcase.

Re: Which prop is better?

Was that with the 27 or the 25 today with the partner?

Re: Which prop is better?

Looks as if there is one thing for certain. We are having the SAME problems.
Left the 25p Tempest on it, took a partner (lil 150lb guy).
6800rpm/60mph, stable.

After all that I've done, I think back to when it was all stock with the 25p Yamaha prop..and..engine was as far down as it would go.
I didn't have GPS then, but, Best I can tell the speedo and gps "pretty much" mirror each other. Speedo is usually showing +/- 2mph.
The boat had an awsome hole shot, ran bow up high, stable, loaded/unloaded made no difference. It'd show 62mph on the speedo with 200lbs in the passenger seat (or with just me)...RPM's were 5,000.
It would go no faster, but, it was a really smooth ride.

EVERYBODY says it was wrong set-up and engine needed to be moved up. There is no arguing with that...I've gone faster with the motor up, and the boat does take turns better.
I just can't seem to get my holeshot back. Can't make it do the same thing twice. Passenger makes it much slower.
I'm not giving up yet, but, I'm running out of enthusiasm...fast.

Re: Which prop is better?

Brownies...I think you are getting into some other issues with your set-up.
I think you are getting better speed which is lifting the boat more, but maybe TOO much at the wrong end...
I've read this over and over and I'm not sure it isn't trying to push the bow back down and thats when the ride goes south.
You say the gas milage has went to heck in another post, and if running the RPM it should be with less resistance, it shouldn't change much but 5000 max (before) should have been a fuel eater too.
I also think your best ride with the 4-bld strengthens my thinking on needing more bow-lift...the 4-bld lifts a bit more.
Those are good props you are running, but they may not have the features you need.

Re: Which prop is better?

When i first my prop on at the same hieght as the 4blade you could feel the backin raise up and the front drop while trimming, this is something for all of us to think about and work out,our problems are close, but don't be giving up now you done come to far, look at it as a good excuse to get on the water and go fast :) we got Kenny and Dhadley on our side we will figure something out.

Re: Which prop is better?

Three props back to back. Propshaft 1.5" below pad.
Yamaha M series, 3 blade, 25p: 63mph@5300rpm. Any attempt to go faster will result in chine walk and any gain in speed is a slow climb after 61mph. (number of passengers does not affect performance)....Good holeshot, smooth acceleration.

Tempest, 3 blade, 25p: 64-66mph@5800 rpm. Any attempt to go faster results in chine walk. Two passengers results in 60mph@5800rpm. Decent holeshot, prop blows out as boat breaks over on plane. Pretty annoying all-round experience...other than it moved the boat faster than the others with one person (driver).

Mercury High Five, 5 blade, 25p: 62-63mph@5700rpm. Good holeshot, prop does not blow out breaking over on plane, but, has the feeling that it "almost" does. Still good acceleration. Any attempt to go faster than 63mph results in chinewalk.

Of these three, the high five 25p compares closely with the yamaha 25p in boat handling, speed, boat "attitude", and acceleration...other than that five blade allows 400 more rpm.

So far, I've found props with more than three blades to gain rpm. I thought the general rule was if you ran a 25p three blade, and switched to a four...drop 2" of pitch? It's sort of been the opposite for me.

Re: Which prop is better?

The lift ability is different between every prop you tried...I still don't see a pattern except bad handling at top speed.
This may be a bit off-course, but have you considered a set of mobster tabs????? That's what I had to do to stabilize my boat above about 55, but I don't have a pad and I use a higher rake prop.

Re: Which prop is better?

Whens the new props going to be in?I've been pondering our sitiuations and your right we have 2 different boats and basically the same problem.I think your closer than i am on getting this problem fixed.
Did you raise the motor any more on of these test runs?

Re: Which prop is better?

Propshaft 1.5" below pad. Any higher and I loose water pressure when loaded (passengers). The boat does become more stable at high speeds with just me and the motor raised though.
Raising the motor to where I just have water pressure with me alone in the boat has these effects.
1. It's 1 to 2mph faster.
2. Rpms's increase considerably.
3. I can control the boat at 1 to 2mph faster (it's a more stable ride).

Mobster tabs/trim tabs can't be installed on this boat (skeeter). There's no room due to the transom design.

Re: Which prop is better?

Apples and Oranges.
Two of the guys that work here have 18-19' runabouts. Both came with 4.3L V-6's.
Given our insanity, both of those boats now have modified small blocks in them. 383ci and a 350.
Neither boat is a "pad" hull design.
Both boats chinewalk at around 55mph.
Their solution to this is to GO FASTER. Both boats will push thru it and stabilize again around 60mph with top speeds of 64-66mph.

These guys seem to think my boat will stabilize again if I can ever push thru it. Problem is, It's not gaining speed fast enough to get thru this and find out. So, I don't know.

I've seen posts on here that say those types of V-bottom boats won't chinewalk. Both these guys will argue that, and one of em is considering trim tabs just out of curiosity I think?
