Merry Christmas. I am working on my '84 Rinker V170 open bow. It has a 3 liter Mercruiser in it. I have a 14X 19 Stainless prop that needs some repairs. and another prop I just got with the boat that the PO swears is the correct prop, 14x23 Aluminum. Which will work best for general boating?

It won't cost you anything to put the 23 pitch prop on it and see how it performs. Chances are that you won't be able to pull the redline with that prop. Most 140's use 19 and 21 pitch props geared as they are.

Fortunately, you can now get new aluminum prop replacements for just over $100.

When you try these props get us the wot rpm and gps speed with a light load.
We then can tell if your setup is working as it should and suggest what may help.

I would think that the 19 pitch would be the logical choice for a 120 hp.

Which three liter motor are we talking about?

I have the 140 HP 3.0. The engine appears to be the one that came with the boat.

With that engine I would say the 19 is the correct prop. I would try it out, if possible, at see what the WOT and speed are.

I have a 14x19 prop with the same engine, and I assume the same outdrive. I would guess that our boats are setup very similar.
Anyway, at W.O.T. mine turns around 4500 @ 40 mph on a good day, 37 or so on a bad, with a light load checked with GPS.
I'm going to go with the the 19 crowd as well, I don't think you'll be happy with that 23 on there, However, it won't cost anything to try it.
