I have a 1974 70HP evinrude in has the orginal prop and im wanting to upgrade. its on a 16 foot dixie boat and it will run like 26-28 mph. i dont know much about props i want one good for pulling skiiers and good high speed. how much faster would a good prop make my boat? at 28mph how fast do u think it would change it?

The key info needed in picking a new prop is what do you have for a prop now? and how many rpm is your engine turning at full throttle?

To get more speed and more pulling power from a prop will be difficult. Usually you have to give up speed to get more power, and vise versa.

miichael,

Without knowing your top RPM, you are guessing. That engine needs to run at a minimum of 5500 at WOT. If not, you are lugging it and asking for troubles.

Hi miichael, you really need to know your rpms at WOT.less pitch/diameter = more rpm.
more pitch/diameter = less rpm.I have just fitted Hustler props to my boat & Im very impressed. They are a 2 part prop. The hub & an interchangeable housing available in different pitches/diameters.The good thing about them is a new housing is about the cost of a repair. You could get a lower pitched prop for waterskiing & a higher pitched one for speed.Try this guy he may be able to help email:propdok@aol.com or his website is www.BoatpropsRus.He has been very helpful. :) :)
