Which rectifier for an Ev 1987 90HP (E90TLCUR)

Technician at Evinrude said I could use a 0585195 (9amp) even though original was a 0395391 which was superceded by 0395204, both of which are 35amp. The technician said 35 amp was way overkill. Any expert on this area with feedback ? The price difference is substantial $85 vs. $215. Unfortunately I bought a used rectifier off EBAY for $60 and even though it is the same part number it still might not fit per the technician because the same part, was made differently depending on age. IMO that really sux.

When you said tech at Evinrude, do you mean BPR? I think you are getting wrong info from the tech. You also need to know which stator is on the engine. Engine that came from factory with tilt and trim had 9 amp stator, engine that did not have t&t had 6 amp stator. Regulator is not the same for both engines. Both regulators are not cheap.

Yeah, technical assistance at Evinrude.com. If you go to websites, there is only 3 models and only one does not have T & T. The 2 models with trim both use the same rectifier 0395391 which is in writing has been replaced by 0395204.

As you can see my stator is 3/9 amp because I have T & T. This technician said there is no need for 35amp ie 0585195 would suffice. Just deferring to experts on this board to deny or support his claim. I hope he is right but I am clueless and just thinking with my wallet.

Go with what the tech said. I think one is air cooled, 1 is water cooled. I also think the 3/9 amp water cooled was eliminated about the same time the purple wire was eliminated on the 35 amp regulator.

If you plug the basic 90 hp 395391 regulator/rectifier into the BRP system they superceded it to the 395204 which is the 35 amp version. Nearly $ 300.

I bought a new old stock OMC 35amp, that I got on EBay for $92. You can use a 9amp water cooled R/R, the 35amp was an over kill with the motors with T&T. I never seen a 90hp with T&T and 35amp stator, but I could be wrong.

I don't believe OMC ever used a 35 amp stator on a V4. They never had a vented flywheel on the V4 models. The engineers probably figured out they did not need two different combination regulator/rectifiers, so they supercede everything to the one they still manufacture.

STATOR is 3/9 AMP not 35. So you can see tech saying to use a 9 amp rectifier ? Why wouldn't that be protocol instead of the $300 rectifier or is that a dumb question ?

Oh yeah, any feedback on why a rectifier 0395391 from an '85 150Hp would be configured differently (wires shorter and positioned differently) than the one on my '87 90HP (also a 0395391) ? The tech said once I get my old one out the replacement I got off EBAY (rectifier) may not fit ??? I don't get that.

Different location of the connection strips where it connects to the rest of the harness.
If it fits in the hole in the block and the top does not get shaved off by the flywheel, just modify the leads.

Re: Which rectifier for an Ev 1987 90HP (E90TLCUR)

Now I opened a can of worms and have to make up my mind. Just got off the phone with guy on Ebay who sells used parts OUTBOARDMARINEDOCTOR. He was pretty knowledgeable as well as honest. He was not familiar with the idea of switching out a 35 AMP rec with a 9 AMP but after looking at everything and thinking about it he concurred with tech. He also convinced me that it is better to buy new rather than used. He cannot guarantee that what he sells is in working order and it is a lot of work to switch them out. He does have a 30 day return policy and sells these for people who are short on money but who have time to remove and replace if necessary. He specializes in OMC stuff but pushed me in CDI direction. He thought that CDI studied the OEM design flaws and improved their product in those areas. He has a very high opinion of CDI. He has a repair shop and a boat load (haha)of used parts he will sell on EBAY. Brand new CDI rec is only $63 to my door. OMC is $85. If I do this I got a $60 used 35 AMP rec that I can ... throw in a box. Any opinion on CDI vs OMC rectifiers ?

CDI has been around for some time, and has a very good reputation

I had asked the same questions you are when my R/R went out. No one new why OMC put or lists 35amp R/R for T&T motors. Yet they only put and list 9amp stators for motors with T&T. The only reason I used a 35amp on mine was cause I got a new old stock one for a good price, other wise I was going to put a 9amp on.

Did the 9 amp work out? I have the same motor and not sure which route to take in rectifier replacement. Sorry in advance for the thread resurrection 😊

The 35 amp was the factory update.----The 9 amp rectifier will also work.

Ok thanks, I was looking at the 9 amp one and noticed the wire colors are a little different. I have a gray wire that goes to the terminal and no red.
