I am trying to get a material list together, was looking on UScomposites website and they list a few different resins. I am wondering what everyone is using? Im replacing the stringers and transom and decking.

Lam resin .. your best bet is lamination resin.

Sometimes you could use VE resin .. but in this case I would do some top quality Lam Resin :)

Everyone is not using the same resin . . .

lots of folks use polyester. . . I like using vinyl ester.

for laminating, we generally use unwaxed resin. For the last layer, we would use waxed resin, unless we are going to gel coat over it.

cost, amount, skill required. If you can get it local then poly unwaxed but if you have to order it and have it delivered then epoxy is not much more expensive as it costs less to post as its not toxic. Also epoxy is easier to work with, better and safer. I was going to order off line then i found a local place where it was $125 a bucket (poly) including hardner so that worked out $500-$600 cheaper on the job over epoxy but i had to use extra glass and coats to make up for the reduced strenth of poly so i saved maybe $400 but i had to deal with the fast drying times and the extra coats of glass which didnt make the job fun. (i would not use epoxy as a filler as thats way to expensive)
Buying glass/bubbles/chop locally is a bad idea as they do charge alot more and have less of a selection especially precut widths of glass than UScomposites. (its a real pitty UScomposites will not sell over the counter as they are not that far away so its bad that i have to pay to shipping and the extra handling fees)

Hmmmmm ok! so if Im replacing stringers and building my transom which should I use? if you look on USComposites web site Im thinking 435 is their standard polyester Marine layup resin.

Re: Which resin is everyone using?

ok Ill throw this out there, I did some figuring, here's what I have to work with. I have 4 stringers to replace 2@14"x11' and 2@11"x11'. I also have a transom that is 801/2"x46", I also have 2 motor mounts that are 6x8x24".The deck is 81"x 11' and I'll be relining the bilge area its 36"x48". I'll be coating the underside of the decking with resin also for waterproofing. Can anyone give me an approximate material list? 1.5oz chop strand, 1708 biax, resin, chop fiber etc?

First you don't HAVE to use Marine grade plywood. It IS the best but not totally necessary. A lot of the members have been using the exterior grade Arauco brand plywood sold @ Lowe's, Home Depot or Menards. It's virtually Void Free, has 7 plys, uses waterproof glue and is really nice stuff. About 1/2 the price of Marine Grade. If you seal it well it will last 40+ years in your boat.

WOG’s Suggested Materials List for Total Restore of a 16-18’ 3 - Stringer Boat.

It's impssible to give an exact "Quote" of everything you'll need but this list will get you "Started" and from there, after you've done some "Glassin" you should have a good idea of what you'll need to "Finish-UP"

Here's the Starting List.

PPE

Respirator (Full Face Preferred $100) if not then double filtered 1/2 face and Goggles with vents taped over.
Latex Gloves (1 – 2 Box(s))
Leather Gloves 1 Pair
Full cover Hooded Tyvek suit. (Rubber Band or Tape the Wrists and Ankles, wet Towel around your neck)
Talcum Powder (coat yourself TOTALLY with talcum powder prior to every grinding Session. USE A LOT)

Demo Equipment

Prybars, Hammers, chisels, Putty Knives
Flat tipped shovel to remove foam, Old Carpenters Saw (The Old Fox Hole Army Surplus Shovels work well)
Circular Saw
Sawzall
Dremel Tool
Router
Drill
Random Orbit Sander
Rasps, Files
4 1/2" Grinder with Backup Pad and 24 grit resin coated sanding discs
Masking Tape
Shop Vac for dust control or Dust Collector if you're fortunate enough to have one. It's good to create a Plastic Tent over the boat to contain the dust. There WILL be a LOT of it....A LOT!!!!

Glassing and Wood Products

3-4 sheets 3/4" Arauco Ext. Grade Plywood
(Possibly some ?” and ?” for side panels and seat bases when and where needed”

15 -20 Gallons 435 Polyester Resin
4 gals Cabosil
1 lbs 1/4" chopped strand fibers
25 yds 1.5 oz CSM
15 yds 1708 Biaxial Cloth
2 dozen 1 qt plastic mixing buckets and stir sticks
1 - 1/2" x 5" Fiberglass "Bubble" roller
2 dozen Short nap 6" nylon roller covers and trays
2 dozen 3" Chip Brushes (cut ? the length of the bristles off)

Wow! W.O.G your something elses my friend! if I may call you that? I planned on using Arauco plywood only because I hadn't planned on doing the whole deck and complete stringers. So now I need to find ways to save money. When you speak of fairing material? do you mean peanut butter or bedding material for the stringers? And yes I will check with Eastpoint Fiberglass, they arent that far from me. Thanks again.

Fairing material is use for fixing gouges, deep scratches, etc. Kinda like PB only you use Glass bubble instead of Cabosil. Mix to the consistency of Tootpaste and it's a dream to sand.

Re: Which resin is everyone using?

WOG, if you would please take a look at my other post, http://forums.iboats.com/boat-resto...a-sprite-225-ssb-transom-re-build-596951.html post number 11 and see if you can give me some ideas for clamping the new transom in above the key hole? Im having a hard time deciding how Im going to get it clamped tight up top. Thinking maybe usi ng the 2 tie down holes to start. what say you?

Is your transom just a central piece of wood or a full width?

Re: Which resin is everyone using?

i followed wog shopping list a while back and it was not far off. I did have a problem with the 10 quarts of cabosil as they sold it per lb so i kinda messed up and now have a huge bag left over (wasnt cabosil by name but worked the same). Only problem i had was cutting the glass for the stringers as i didnt realy have a large area to roll out the glass to mark and cut it for the stringers. mine were 15' long and under 11" high so i wish i had gone with pre cut rolls for them but as yours are 14" you may have no option.

Re: Which resin is everyone using?

USC sells cabosil by the Quart and by the gallon and by the Pound. I suggest now that you buy the 4 gallon parcel. As they state it takes about one quart of cabosil per 1 quart of resin to thicken it to mayonaise consistency so to get PB you'll need about 1 1/2 quarts. So if you use 10 quarts of resin to make PB you'll need a minimum around 16 quarts (4 gals) of Cabosil. by the time you fillet the transom, stringers and deck you'll be close to using that much is suspect.

I will check with Eastpoint Fiberglass, they arent that far from me.

You can also try Michigan Fiberglass. They are very close to each other. Michigan Fiberglass has more inventory .. but both sell basically the same stuff you would need.

Another source is at Skipper Budds .. right there in Fenton :) .. ( they have local and other accounts that you can order through them for some supplies and materials ). BTW .. Brian @ Skippers is the Best wrench I know of around those parts. You might be able to save some fuel $ ordering from them as compared to traveling down to 9 mile Detroit from Fenton.
