Which STATOR do I need?

I'm taking a guess as to why my 86 Force 85HP isn't starting, I'm going to start replaceing parts.<br /><br />My problem is, I want to start with the stator as it seems to be the cheepest but I forgot my serial no. at the cottage.<br /><br />Does anyone know if their are different model stators for a 1986 Force 85HP? or is it one size fits all?<br /><br />Thanks a million,<br />AS

Would suggest getting a repair manual and a meter and testing parts before just replacing them, unless you have tons of money - if thats the case then just buy a new motor<br /><br />I would start by inspecting each and every wire for cracked/broken/missing insulation. Check the stator wires to ensure they are still connected at both ends. Do a resistance check on the stator.

I just got back from the lake (took the afternoon off to drive all the way up to troubleshoot the boat).<br /><br />I replaced the plugs, still no fire<br />I checked for continueity across the neutral start switch and its fine, I checked the rectifier/regulator etc etc.<br /><br />I then removed the flywheel and found that the stator has a burn mark on it. I'm guessing that its time to replace it.<br /><br />My *NEW* question is, where is the best / cheepest place to buy a stator from??<br /><br />Thanks,<br />AS.
