I recently purchased a 17 ft deep v that weighs about 2000lbs. with motors. It appears to be set up for 2 batteries and the socket at the bow says 12/24 volt. I can't decide if I should get a 55 or 70 p thrust motor. I think a 55 would work, but the formulas I found say I should get at least a 70. Would it be stupid to not take advantage of the 24 volt hookup, I would just give up some storage space and add some weight. Also do you think this sounds like I can use either a 12 or 24 volt motor since it has the cables for 2 batteries. I will use the motor primarily to fish along shore in relatively calm lake that gets a little windy sometimes. Thanks for your input.

55 will be enough in calm water, but I'd spring for the 70 if the budget allows. you'll find some uses for the extra power. plus which, the 24v motor will draw less amps than 12v (at the same speeds), so you'll get longer run time.

my local fishing board has a lot of reports of problems with the wireless steering on both MG and MK (circuit boards burning out). Motorguide has some models with cable steer and variable speed (way, way more energy efficient than the 5-speed "adjustable speed" motors).

Myself, I ended up with the old-school 5-speed & cable steer anyway cause I didn't want to spend the extra $$$. I went with motorguide, just for brand loyalty cause the prices were practically the same, but I wouldn't hesitate to go either way.
