i need help finding the right parts # for a pair of u joint spiders for my volvo penta sterndrive. the info on the name plate is sx-m 1.79 ratio. ser# 420213365 prod# 3868893
i have taken the old u joints out, everything looks fine so i just need the u joints. the clips that hold the joints were on the outside of the yolks. so far the only answers i get from volvo dealers is that the whole piece has to be purchased as a complete unit with the shafts and can't just replace the u joints. hopefully there are u joints available. thanks for any help or advice.

Might want to look up in the stickies at the top of this forum. Look under Volvo info.

thanks don, it looks like the sierra 18-3304 is what i'm looking for. 120 dollars each at napa. do you know of another manufacture that would be the same as the sierra. i'm just looking for a cheaper price.

Most all of these bearing crosses come from the auto/truck/industrial side. There's a tremendous mark up on these when the word Marine shows up.
The AQ series internally clipped cross can be substituted with Spicer quality in a 5-1306X. The X designates the grease fitting in the apex of the cross. Cost is about $14 each.
The Rockford K4, Spicer 5.4X and the German Meyle 3520 997 are externally clipped and work as a later AQ series bearing cross replacement.... not sure about the SX or DP-S .

Check with an Off-Road 4WD company or a Drive Line service company. Take your shaft and old cross with you. They should be able to cross reference by physically measuring the cross and your shaft bearing cap bores.
It might be worth asking if it would put $50-60 in your pocket. No shipping and you walk out the door with the parts you need.

Re: which u joints

i replaced the ujoints with external clips on my sx-m. bought sierra 18-6406 and used the clips that were packaged with the ujoints. i had a hard time on both ujoints trying to seat the second clips in their groves. i put the first clip into its groove and then pressed extremely hard on the opposite side ujoint cap to install the second clip into its groove. hopefully this is normal. i can only imagine what would happen on this type of ujoint design if any of the clips were to come out of the grooves.
