OK, stupid i know, pulled the powerhead apart to change a suspect bearing, thought what the hell might as well change all while at it, NOW the problem is i forgot to mark the pistons, i know which is top middle and bottom, but they have cutouts in the sides of the pistons, which i think are the "valve" bits , that control intake and exhaust, but which way do i fit them as both sides are differant, a photo would help me, i do have the manual, but it does not clearly show the piston being put back into the block. HELP, i need to get this rebuilt ASAP as going into hospital in a couple days time for a major op, and will be out of action for 6 weeks after that

Depending on what brand they are, they're marked on the dome. Either "Up" (toward flywheel) or an arrow towards exhaust port.

However, if you didn't take them off the rods, the little dimple on the rod and cap face up. Or just look at the ring location. You don't want a ring gap in the exhaust port. Or, the skirt cutouts go toward the intake side.

hi, the piston crowns are completely blank, no writing on them at all.
the dimple you mentioned is not on the rods, however there is a raised "lump" on the actual piston itself cast into where the little end goes through, so i am guessing that must be up toward the flywheel. The cut outs in the piston do not align with the exhaust port or any of the three other ports in the liner.

would you happen to have a picture of which way it goes in, as a pic is worth a 1000 words as we all know, i could send you my email address if not possible to put one on here.

Thanks in advance

There has to be a dimple or point on the rod and one on the cap. That's so you know which way to align the cap (the caps cannot be switched to other rods either). Anyway, look at the ring end gaps. They cannot be in the exhaust port.
